Meet Rafael Serrano of Rafael Serrano Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rafael Serrano.

Rafael, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Everything started 8 years ago, when we bought our first professional camera to take pictures of our daughter, when I got the camera in my hands I felt the need to learn how to operate it in manual instead of automatic. What was the point to invest in something nice and don’t know how fully works? We studied day and night with a Photography Institute in New York that one of my closest friends recommended. Then my curiosity flew more, I started going to college and take photos of the city by itself.

I was so proud of myself, when someone told me one day, “What about if you add people there and tell a story?” I loved the idea, the idea to do photography different in Dallas, not going traditional at all, including the backgrounds, the lines, the art, the city, even the landscapes. In order to tell the story of someone, I wanted people to see my photos and recreate why the person is there.

Then I started doing weddings, I called myself a storyteller, I want to show the most important date of my couples through the art, leave the essence of the day playing with lights and creative, give the opportunity to couples to show their special day in a creative way.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think going to the spot you want shouldn’t be a smooth road, it has to have sacrifices in order to love more what you’re getting. Nothing was easy, first I am from another country and another language, and I was shy at the beginning. I invested a lot of money on gear I don’t even use now, but I believe is how we learned. In other hands, it was how to show my work out there and is a lot of marketing and a lot of connections.

But, one thing I learned is: It doesn’t matter how much money you invest in marketing and getting clients if you don’t know how to approach them, how to be a real you talking about your work and products with a client.

Please tell us about Rafael Serrano Photography.
We have a wedding photography studio, we mostly do weddings and headshots, with some other sessions like family, seniors for our current clients. Thank God every year gets busier, we like to treat people like family and friends, they know us from day one and this will never change. I like to know and like people, I work with and they feel the same way to me. Weddings is a long process, at least with a year preparation so we have a lot of talking and meeting in order to prepare the best day of our couples to be a success.

We are a complete studio, we offer different ways to print art, and that makes me proud because I grew up looking albums and prints all over my house of those we love and I am sad with the fact right to know about people not printing their memories. That’s why we create our studio as a complete wedding studio, give the opportunity to our couples to get printed their memories in the best products they can find and have something they can relate in the future.

For sure my style is different, I showcase the whole scenery and I tell the story of my couples there. I love incorporate skies, lines, lights, reflections, everything that helps to create art pieces for our clients.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I will do the same, we need to do mistakes in order to learn. I loved all the road through the place we are now, I love the people that helped me and also who say no to me. For the professional years we have done weddings, so far is being magnificent. In order to success, you need to be unique.
