Meet Randy Cotton of Cotton Electric Service in Duncanville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Randy Cotton.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Randy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My father founded Cotton Electric Service in 1980 – the same year I was born. So, I guess you could say that I was born into it! Growing up, he allowed me to help out if I wanted in order to make some money during summer breaks. I had to fund my baseball card collecting habit somehow! After graduating from Duncanville High School, I headed off to The University of Texas at Austin. My goal was to get a degree and find a job that would allow me to pursue my love of being outdoors – fishing, golfing, and camping. After completing my degree, I tried to find employment in the environmental science field and did not have much luck. I was apart of the “no experience” predicament that faces many new graduates. I ultimately decided to return to Duncanville and work with my dad. So 18 years later, here I am! My father retired two years ago and I now have all the joys and headaches of owning a small business!

Has it been a smooth road?
My path to business ownership has been a series of blessings as well as challenges and realities. I am blessed that my father built a solid business and we have a great customer base with several repeat clients. My struggles stem from the hardship that many small business owners face. We wear multiple hats throughout the day and juggle multiple roles within the company from moment to moment! From working on the accounting side to then stepping into the role of a human resource to constantly being in customer service!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Cotton Electric Service specializes in both commercial and residential electrical fields. On the commercial side, we have completed several projects such as working on the electrical needs of restaurants, warehouses, healthcare facilities, retail stores, and parking lot lighting. For the residential side, we work on both new homes and remodels. We also take daily service work orders for small problems such as plugs and lighting that do not work. The thing that I believe sets us apart and I am the proudest of is our reputation of integrity and commitment to our clients. I strive to operate my business and treat others how I would like to be treated – fairly with dignity and respect.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Dallas is growing so rapidly and has seen such a large influx of people and businesses’. For that reason, there are numerous opportunities for growth in my business as well as most any business right now to meet the demands of a rising population. We are also supported and surrounded by great towns and suburbs that help to make our area thrive.
