Today we’d like to introduce you to Randy Salinas.
Randy, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
When I was in middle school me and my brother Junior would help my parents cater to weddings. My dad would cook meat and my would cook up the sides, but due to health problems, they had to stop catering. In 2014 I started watching pitmasters and it brought back some good memories. So I got with my dad and brother and we decided that after ten plus years, we would fire back up the smoker and start catering again in hopes of providing delicious bbq at a cheap price.
Over the past six years, I have worked to perfect everything we cook up, including our BBQ sauce. This year I decided it was time to take a chance and have our BBQ Sauce officially bottled and they are now available online and sold in six stores. I started this business with my family and together, we plan on providing everyone a great BBQ that we are proud of.
Has it been a smooth road?
We would love to say it’s been a smooth journey but it hasn’t. We have had months where we were busy every weekend and then go several months with no catering jobs. We knew being a small business who relies on word of mouth and operating with our own money would be tough.
This year with our sauces scheduled to come out, we had a full list of catering gigs, BBQ competitions and BBQ sauce demos that all got canceled, with us losing opportunities to make money. We had to adjust and learn how to the market the sauce and our BBQ in different ways. With the help of our amazing customers, we were able to turn this year into a great year and in three months, we have far exceeded our expectations.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Big Salinas Barbecue story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a family-owned catering business that cooks up delicious BBQ and Mexican food. We have had people who can’t stop raving about our brisket. We now have our award-winning BBQ sauce official for sale. Our original and Spicy BBQ sauce are becoming a hit, not only for the backyard cooks but has helped several teams besides us win awards in 2020. We provide great customer service and even better food.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The BBQ industry is growing; more and more people are getting into catering, selling seasoning, or sauces. I think it will continue to grow and more and more BBQ restaurants will open up.
