Meet Ranjeeta Rath of The Yoga Retreat in Southlake

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ranjeeta Rath.

Ranjeeta, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It is a long story that goes back nearly 30 years. I grew up in Chakradharpur, a small town in India, and my father insisted that I try yoga. I was not very excited to try it but my father felt yoga would help me obtain the flexibility required for Kathak, (a classical Indian) dance, which I was learning at that time. After my first few yoga lessons, I was frustrated, finding the techniques challenging, and I stopped attending classes for some time. However, I began to miss the way I felt after a yoga class, and so went right back into it and felt like I was home. It was a growth path from there. I have practiced all types of yoga in various places both in India and the US. While I was pregnant, I practiced yoga more than at any other time. In 2014, I finally decided to take it to a new level and obtained my teacher’s training.

My academic background is finance and I hold an MBA from Pepperdine University and I started working in this field as soon as I graduated. After working for several institutions in California and Louisiana, I started working for HCA. Soon I realized that it was getting hard to have a balanced life with my kids, husband and daily family routine. One of the hardest decisions I have had to make was to resign from my job and open my Yoga studio in August 2016.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road was not smooth one. As there is a famous saying, it is important to remember the obstacles and the easy moments that come along the way, as it always makes you cherish your achievements.

The initial struggle for me was to take the decision of leaving my job and opening the studio. The whole process of find a good contractor was extremely challenging. I had one contractor, who basically took payment and did not complete the work as per the city requirements. I had to hire another contractor to finish the project as per the commercial code requirements. Also, going through the process of obtaining permits was definitely very challenging.

Above that, there were moments when friends and families started doubting my dream of opening the studio. But these are the moments made me a stronger person and pushed me hard to achieve my goals.

So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Yoga Retreat story. Tell us more about the business.
It is a boutique yoga studio in the town of Southlake. At this studio, we offer various kind of yoga classes to all age groups. We have heated and non-heated vinyasa classes, slow flow yoga, Restorative, family yoga and yoga ball therapy. We specialize in power style vinyasa; however, we have a huge variety of classes and all the teachers are trained in their respective fields.

The Yoga Retreat is a very organic boutique yoga studio, we do not have mirrors so that we are not distracted while we practice yoga. Each teacher walks around the class to make that connection with each yogi in the room, helping them with alignment. Each teacher brings in a uniqueness to the class and we build a community of yogis. Our yoga ball therapy program is offered to athletes and injured yogis to help the recover faster and reduce pain. This program is a very unique program and offers help to people who are otherwise afraid to do yoga.

Our boutique studio has infrared heat which sets it apart from other studios in the metroplex. The infrared heat directly converts light to heat without heating the environment. This heat is used for detoxifying and muscular flexibility. It also helps in improving cardio-vascular system.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I am very fortunate to have come this far in every aspect in life. When I look back, I feel truly blessed to have a loving and supportive family who sailed with me through both the high tide and low tide. My true good luck is having a good support system of friends and family. I try to learn from the bad moments and cherish the good ones.
