Today we’d like to introduce you to Raquel Martinez.
Raquel, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio and moved to Dallas six years ago to pursue my passion and start my career. I started off assisting for a year and worked my way to a full-time stylist. My year assisting, I fell in love with extensions and knew that’s what I wanted to specialize in. I was definitely blessed with the best mentor that taught me much of what I know and saw more in me than I saw in myself. My love for extensions and color grew once I started taking education and networking within the industry. It’s an amazing feeling knowing you can make someone feel like a new person every single time you see them!
Has it been a smooth road?
I moved here with 3,000 dollars, my clothes, my car, and one dream. I didn’t have another plan. There were many struggles along the way and not one thing worked out as I planned. Being in a big city by myself, there were emotional struggles, Financially, I had my hardships which drove me to work two jobs. I always tell people your first year will be your test. So many times, I wanted to pack up and go back home because I was overwhelmed. I was completely scared, but I never lost focus of my goal. I’m so blessed that I stuck through it all because I do what I love and feel free.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I specialize in Extensions and Color and have been for five years. I love to give my clients the best experience every single time. I have some clients that drive a distance and one that flys in so I really set the bar high for myself when it comes to the guest experience. Aside from talking about life with my guest, I still have to remember that I am their specialist in hair and that is why they are in my chair. I really believe that what sets any person apart in business is the customer experience and how your guests feel when they leave. I’m very proud of the guest experience I provide and I feel like that is what sets me apart.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think the beauty industry is booming in Dallas along with so many other industries. Dallas has been good to me, but it also is hard work no matter where you are. I believe it doesn’t matter where you start as long as you provide a phenomenal guest experience to your clientele you will get the results. Clients don’t care if you do hair in your garage. It’s about how you make them feel.
