Meet Rar Farmer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rar Farmer.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I grew up in a creative family. When I was a kid, I wanted to be a singer, Reba to be specific. Life got in the way of that. My parents divorced when I was twelve, and from there, life was just about survival. My mom and I had it hard for a while, and I became cynical, and a young alcoholic. I skipped college to go right to work as a pipe welder and taking photos here and there part-time.

In 2000/01, I was one of the few principal welders that built the Texas Titan at Six Flags in Arlington. In 2003, I was in a car accident that nearly killed me. The crash left me injured and disabled enough to ensure I’d never step back into that profession. Welding was my creative outlet and my livelihood, so I was lost at that point. Suffering from PTSD and struggling with addiction from prescribed opioids made trying to figure out where to go from there rough, but that mud is where my creative lotus bloomed.

I started painting in 2005, doing murals, and commissioned work for the few people that wanted to invest in me. I took a few photos here and there, did a few weddings for friends, but didn’t have the business sense or the self-esteem to take it on full-time. Plus, I had a landed a sweet gig with like-minded people at Half Price Books, and didn’t have plans to leave, but then life. In 2016, I finally decided to take my photography seriously. It’s the thing that keeps me inspired, busy, and sane.

Please tell us about your art.
I’m a photographer and content creator. I collaborate with local businesses, brands, and influencers to create authentic content for their social media outlets, and that’s been an exciting journey. I’ll take pictures anytime, anywhere. I take a camera with me everywhere, and it’s a habit that’s opened up so many doors I didn’t even know existed. My business, my art, is all about people, and making new connections, connecting others, that’s what really drives my work these days.

I hope that people read about my life, see my work, and feel inspired to do the thing that they love most, and do it often.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
For some of us, I think consistently creating engaging content in a content-rich environment where there is so much competition is the new normal. I find this to be one of the more positive challenges we face, albeit still a problem. It makes the thought of “writer’s block” that much more potent of a threat, while also being a remedy with its wealth of creative inspiration.

And then there are all the traditional challenges, like finding people who want to invest in our work and learning how to be a business minded. Not to mention, the inner struggle of hating capitalism while also wishing to participate in it in hopes of capitalizing on your work so that you can continue to create and eat and clothe your kids. I could go on and on.
