Today we’d like to introduce you to Ratna Goenardi.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My BFA from Texas Christian University was in graphic design. I had been working in big ‘Corporate America’ environment, in the capacity of both packaging and product designer, when the economy ‘crashed’ and got laid off. With bills and a mortgage to pay, I started doing what I needed to do, making ends meet by making specialty/highly custom cakes and cupcakes for friends.
Fast forward a few years later, I decided to pursue this accidental new career as a full-time profession, and opened Sugar Biscuit’s storefront.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Of course, NOT! That said, the bumps along the road have been small and forgiving. Hard work, long hours, great customer service, great product… The list of excellence goes on.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Sugar Biscuit Cakery – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I specifically chose to brand my shop a ‘CAKERY’. We do highly custom cakes and cupcakes for special occasions. Macarons and cookies as well. Personally, I feel that my BFA in design is the anchor that sets Sugar Biscuit Cakery apart from other cake shops. I pride in my design and color decisions with every single product that leaves the shop. There are MANY cake makers, but they tend to throw in the whole kitchen sink into their (cake) design. Balance (in design and color) is the key.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Current plans include steady incline in the business revenue. As a small, TINY, business owner, I witness other small businesses fail to stay in business on a daily base. It’s easy to overlook the importance of keeping overhead low, of not being too greedy and wanting to expand expansively in a short time.
