Meet Rebecca Trejo of Uptown Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Trejo.

Rebecca, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Dallas, Texas. My specialties include PTSD, childhood trauma, and first responder trauma. Becoming a therapist was a second career for me. In my previous life, I worked as a contract negotiator for an oil and gas company. Towards the end of my time in that career, I began to realize how disengaged I was in my day to day. The trouble was that this career was meant to make me “successful”. And I was successful, but I was also bored, and truly unfulfilled. After months of soul searching (and therapy), I decided to leave corporate America apply to both grad school and yoga teacher training. Through both experiences, I became deeply familiar with the effects of trauma on an individual. I was challenged to explore the nature of my own childhood trauma, and found deep meaning in holding space for others with similar experiences.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest struggles I’ve experienced center around the learning of self-compassion and unlearning of self-judgement for both myself and my clients. While I’ve always been an advocate for mental health, the stigmas and beliefs about weakness and vulnerability run deep in our society. I have to confront phrases like “it could have been worse” and “it wasn’t that bad” on a weekly basis. Being human is hard. We’re all doing the best we can, and sometimes we need to be reminded of this fact.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a trauma therapist, I’m trained in evidenced-backed modalities such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Ketamine Assisted-Psychotherapy (KAP). While I work with all forms of trauma, my specialty populations are adults with childhood sexual trauma, and firefighters.

Though I work frequently with EMDR and KAP, a foundation of my practice as a therapist is Mindfulness. I often incorporate holistic practices, such as yoga, mindfulness, or my crystal singing bowls into session. I find that no two clients have the same needs, so I work very intentionally to collaborate with my clients. And above all, I do my best to show up as a human. Clients often believe they’re in my office to be “fixed” and that I might be some sort of beacon of mental health perfection. I strive to remind them that it’s not about what’s wrong with them, but what happened to them. And that therapy is less about learning to never get triggered and more about learning to find contentment in the discontent.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I currently work at The Well Therapy Group, with a wonderfully supportive group of women. Getting connected with Alicia Collins, the owner, was pure luck. An instagram DM turned into a coffee date, turned into a friendship and professional relationship. This community has supported me and my practice in so many ways. I’m grateful to be a part of it.
