Meet Rebekah Martinez of Bekah Jane Photography in McKinney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebekah Martinez.

Rebekah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My journey to being a photographer starts during my childhood. My parents were both hobbyist photographers. They photographed everyday moments and milestones of my childhood. Moments I didn’t realize the significance of at the time. I quickly learned the value of a photograph from my parents. I was hooked and wanted to photograph as many memories as I could.

Fast forward to my adult years, I graduated from college and went to work in corporate America. I felt like there was something missing, and knew I was supposed to be on a different journey. In October of 2012, with the support of my husband and family, I put in my two weeks at my job. With my faith and family guiding me, my professional photography journey began.

I knew that I wanted to learn as much as I could about photography. Over the past six years, I have taken workshops, mentored, practiced daily, and soaked up as much knowledge as I could. It wasn’t just technical things, but also understanding the wants and needs of your clients. Newborn photography requires knowledge not only with your camera but more importantly, the safety of the baby. For toddlers, it’s understanding what makes them unique (and playing a much as possible during our session). For family photos, it’s capturing their dynamic and real moments. These are all things I’ve poured my heart into learning.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As in any career, there have been struggles. Learning my editing style for photos was a challenge. I wanted something timeless, but with bold colors. Trying to stay true to yourself as an artist, and not follow ever-changing trends is tough. When you finally find your editing style, it is worth it!

My most recent struggle has been our relocation to north Texas. My husband received a job offer, and after a lot of praying, we decided it was where we needed to be. I had a booming business and was a premier photographer in my hometown with a dream studio space. The thought of moving was scary, but we both really felt in our hearts it was the right thing. We moved to a city where we knew no one. I had to start my business from the ground up, and it has been the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Learning how to market to a new area, meeting people, finding locations for outdoor photo sessions have been just some of the struggles. Being a photographer is about so much more than just taking photos. This move has humbled me and taught me so much at the same time.

Please tell us about Bekah Jane Photography.
Bekah Jane Photography specializes in maternity, newborn, and family photos. My goal is to grow with families. Meeting a couple as they welcome their brand new baby into the world, and documenting their child grow the first year. After a few sessions, I am familiar with the family dynamic, what they’re wanting in photos, and how to work with parents and their children.

Bekah Jane Photography is most known for posed newborn portraits. I pride myself on keeping things simple with the focus being on baby, good lighting, and use of antique-like props that are timeless.

I am most proud of the relationship I have with my clients. I want them to feel comfortable with me, trust me, and relax while in front of my camera. Having clients choose me to document their life is such an honor, and I strive to make it as enjoyable as possible for all involved.

What sets me apart from others is my ability to create rich, sunlit imagery full of joy. Finding the most flattering, sunlight during outdoor sessions is my specialty. You’re going to watch your child dance or explore in a field of rich warmth. You’ll play with your family while the final glow of sunlight grace your skin. It is magical!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Absolutely! I wouldn’t change my journey to where I am, but rather how I got here. I would’ve learned more early on of the business side of photography. It’s one thing to take good photos, but it is another to understand business.
