Meet Rebekah Schurman of Beauty Hive Salon in Roanoke

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebekah Schurman.

Rebekah, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have had a love for hair and makeup since I was a child. From the youngest age, my friends and I played dress up, and they knew to come to my house always meant getting full hair and makeup done.

I was raised in Federal Way, Washington, just outside of Seattle. I knew that when I graduated high school, I wanted to start cosmetology school immediately. I completed my hours at the Salon Professional Academy in Tacoma, Washington. After I received my license, I interviewed to intern at a well-known salon in our area. This was a high-end salon, with an extensive training program and insane work hours (7:00 am until 2:00 am, depending on the day, lol).

The day I went for my interview my appointment was for 9:00 am…I ended up working with the trainer, (Marv Smith) until almost midnight. At that point, I knew what I was getting into, but I also knew I wouldn’t get the knowledge and experience he was going to pour into me from anywhere else.

I trained under Marv for a year and was required to complete a series of evaluations for a group of very experienced stylists and the salon owner. In each evaluation, I was required to put together either a fashion show or a photoshoot for 6 to 10 models depending on the theme. All the models had to include color, extensions, a specific theme, plus their clothing styled, makeup done, nails, diagrams and before and after photos inside a detailed binder. It was a lot, but I left that apprenticeship feeling confident that I could take on anything. I came away with a love for creating new looks, and a strong ability to take on the worst of color disasters. My fellow co-workers always knew I loved to do color corrections, and that my passion is to help every woman feel their absolute best!

I continued to work at The Hair Lounge in Federal Way, for 9 years until my family and I decided to move to Texas. In looking for a new place to share my experience and hone my skills I found Nicole and The Beauty Hive Salon. When I started working with Nicole on July 2018, we were still located in a suite in Trophy Club. Although the building wasn’t yet completed, I could see the vision Nicole had for a wonderful community where women could come, relax and feel pampered.

I was so excited to be a part of Nicole’s vision and her tribe. I couldn’t be happier with where I am at. The community that has been built within the salon is so welcoming and empowering. Every one of the girls I work with is simply beautiful on the inside and out, and we have the best clients in the world. I couldn’t even imagine life without these amazing women in my life now.

Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. When I first started I had a very hard time talking to people. I lacked the confidence needed to do a proper consultation with the client in my chair. I would say I was afraid and anxious every time I had a new person coming in. It took a year and a lot of pushing from my mentor to get me past it and I am so grateful that he didn’t give up on me.

Moving to a new state not knowing anyone at all has also been a struggle. To start over after 9 years in a new place not knowing a single person is scary and it’s hard to build a clientele not knowing anyone. I am so grateful for Nicole and beauty hive! She made this transition so enjoyable and so much easier than I ever could have expected. I am so happy to be apart of her tribe!

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Beauty hive is a place for women to come and empower each other. Our goal is not only for you to leave feeling beautiful and confident on the outside but also heard, valued, and empowered on the inside. I am so proud to be apart of the community that is being created here.

We are a blonding salon and I specialize in color correction. I enjoy the challenge. Taking someone who has had a bad experience and fixing the issues to give them their dream hair is my favorite thing to do. The joy they have at the end of the process is the best thing ever!

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I haven’t had the opportunity to get out and explore it much since I moved here but so far I would say my favorite thing is the people. Everyone is so welcoming and kind. I have enjoyed getting to know every person that has come into the salon.
