Today we’d like to introduce you to Regina Moyana.
Regina, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born and raised in Zimbabwe. I have always aspired to be a medical doctor and so I moved to the United States for college and completed my baccalaureate degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry ( Summe
Cum Laude) at Wiley College, Marshall, TX. Thereafter, I enrolled at UT Health Science Center Tyler for a Master of Science in Biotechnology. As an aspiring medical doctor, I recognized that the Master of Science in Biotechnology program would equip me with highly desirable skills, primarily those centered around critical thinking and research, that would be beneficial towards my future in medical school and the medical profession. My research was focused on investigating the cellular and molecular mechanisms mediating lung inflammation caused by bacterial extracellular vesicles isolated from organic dust. I successfully defended my research thesis and my research will be published in 2020. While completing my Master’s degree, I applied to several medical schools and got admitted into six schools across the US. I will be attending medical school at Texas Tech University Health Science Center- Lubbock this upcoming Fall 2019.
Has it been a smooth road?
While in my junior year of college, I applied to several medical schools across the US and I did not receive any feedback from any of the schools. NONE! This was probably because I had performed below average on the MCAT and had not accumulated as many hours of shadowing and volunteering, etc. However, I did not give up on my dream of becoming a medical doctor. I rewrote the MCAT and accumulated more volunteering and shadowing hours while completing my Master’s degree and this resulted in a better outcome.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love its diversity and the camaraderie I have observed within different communities. Also, I love the plethora of nature preserve parks in Dallas and cities within proximity of Dallas like Plano and McKinney, etc.
I have yet to find anything I dislike about this city.
