Today we’d like to introduce you to Rick Birt.
Rick, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I retired from my dream job – a Marine Corps Jet Pilot – in 2014, when my wife brought me to a Photography Conference in Vegas. There was a married couple that spoke there about their photography business, and it made me wonder about my wife and I doing the same thing. So I started assisting my wife, Kelly Williams (a 25 year professional). Soon, I picked up one of her old cameras and started shooting. I loved it! I also got a lot of positive feedback from modeling agencies and it just snowballed from there. Now my wife and I do a lot of Fashion Editorials and events together.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There have definitely been some road-bumps along the way. I would say the biggest obstacles I’ve had to overcome, are the disabilities I incurred in the military. However, in the Marine Corps, we always had to improvise, adapt, and overcome – so it’s no different now.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Romeo Bravo Photo – what should we know?
Romeo Bravo Photo specializes in Fashion Photography, Portraits, and Beauty. The name comes from the phonetic alphabet (used in the military and aviation) for my initials – R.B.
As a model, I was always drawn to the classic and dramatic photos created by iconic photographers like Peter Lindbergh, Patrick Demarchelier, and Ellen Von Unwerth. This is where I developed my creative style which I would describe as both classic and cinematic.
I’m proud that I’m in a position to be able to turn down jobs that I’m not passionate about. Being fully invested is very important to me (and my clients). I also do a lot of charity events throughout the community – like Friscovania, Flashes of Hope, and DIFFA. I was also just selected to the board of a new non-profit that aims to help Veterans with PTSD by teaching them photography as a creative outlet.
The thing that sets me apart from others is my work ethic.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My wife, Kelly Williams, is my biggest supporter, mentor, cheerleader, and teammate – all rolled into one! She deserves all the credit for tricking me into this 😉
