Today we’d like to introduce you to Rick Jaynes.
Hi Rick, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After thirteen years of employment at a corporately owned funeral home in Duncanville, Rick Jaynes along with his wife, Laura, felt the need to open their own funeral chapel, and offer local families another choice of funeral care.
The property next door to Merrywood School was purchased from Mrs. Peggy Ogden, a dear friend. Their agreement was made on a handshake. Then with the support of their loving family, countless friends, and the entire community, groundbreaking and construction of Jaynes Memorial Chapel began in the summer of 1998.
With 8000 square feet of space, a chapel seating over 200, three staterooms and complete preparation facilities, Jaynes Memorial Chapel opened in November 1998 to an overwhelming display of support and confidence from the families of Duncanville, Cedar Hill and Southwest Dallas County.
Since then, Jaynes Memorial Chapel has grown to a staff of 11, serving several hundred families each year. Community support and confidence is evident in the growth of the business throughout the years, along with hundreds of 5 star reviews.
The business model has been simple: Jaynes Memorial Chapel provides caring, hometown service at an affordable price.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all. In April 2011, during a roof replacement, we suffered a fire that put us out of our building for about 6 months or more. A story about that time is featured on our website:

Also, of course, the COVID pandemic was a very hard time for funeral homes in general. We were no exception. A busy and stressful time full of uncertainty. We were featured in a Dallas Morning News Sunday morning front page article, relating our COVID experience. You can find that article here:

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I think one of the things that sets us apart from other funeral homes is our focus on details. Whether it’s in the embalming and presentation of the deceased, the staging of a funeral or a memorial service, creating custom floral pieces/settings or the paperwork involved (death certificates, obituaries, printed materials) – we obsess over the details with our families
We are particularly proud of our work in preparing and presenting the deceased in a natural state. Our reviews speak to that a bit.
Also, Laura Jaynes continues her family legacy of custom designing floral pieces and settings for the families at Jaynes Memorial Chapel. (her family owned and operated a florist in Duncanville for 40 years). Certainly, we are proud of that!
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Oh the city of Dallas? It’s a huge market of course and that brings lots of opportunities for a business to carve out their market share by setting themselves apart. But the southern sector moves a little slower I think 🙂 It still feels very hometown here in Duncanville and Oak Cliff.
