Today we’d like to introduce you to Ridge Milke.
Ridge, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Milke’s Jewelers Inc. is family owned and was established in 1977, so I guess you could say I grew up in the business. Going into college, I was always interested in science and going into the medical industry—the complete opposite route of how I was brought up. I attended Texas A&M University and received my bachelor’s degree in Biology and Business Administration. It wasn’t until later in my college years that I realized I wanted to switch routes and join the family business.
Being brought up in the family business, I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the team that we have. I truly believe that “hard work brings great reward.” Growing up, my parents gave me the best life a kid could ask for. I got to witness my parents want more and go after more. I’m a product of that and believe I get my work ethic from them. It’s only fair to give back.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Retail can have its challenges at times. There’s always going to be obstacles along the way in any business, but it’s all about finding a solution and addressing it at that moment. One of the essential factors in this industry is creating brand loyalty. We want to give the customer the best experience they can possibly have. Some deadlines might need to be met sooner than others. At Milke’s, it is our job to understand the customer’s interest and meet their needs regardless of the circumstances.
Technology is another obstacle we face. Being up-to-date and knowledgeable about the latest equipment and software is a huge factor that comes into play within our industry.
Please tell us about Milke’s Jewelers.
My grandfather, Robert Milke Sr., worked in the watch/jewelry business his entire life. Starting out of his garage, he later worked for a company called Swest, which specialized in watch repair. He worked there until later deciding to start his own business. That’s when Milke’s Jewelers Inc. came about. My father, Robert Milke Jr., eventually took over the market in 1989, and we’ve been going strong ever since.
Milke’s Jewelers specializes in everything from custom jewelry/jewelry repair to watch repair. Everything is done in house. We’re mostly known for our custom design and jewelry repair. Most individuals want to make sure their jewelry is safe and secure, so with it being done at our location, it definitely makes a difference. With custom orders, our CAD and 3D printing system allow the consumer to see the entire process. From a quick sketch to the client coming in to view a mold, they can see exactly what they’re getting. If any changes are needed to be made along the way, it can happen without any issue. Once the client is satisfied with their design, we move forward with casting and stone setting until the product is complete.
First, I’m most proud of where the company is headed. About four years ago, the family decided to open another store known as Ralph Austin Jewelers, located in the Lakewood area. My brother, Tanner Milke, manages that location and is head of our CAD program. Three generations later, our company is growing, and we plan on only getting bigger.
What sets us apart from our competitors is that we try to accommodate anyone who is in the market for a new piece of jewelry. Whether the individual wants to buy a small gift or invest in an engagement ring, we’ll be happy to help you.
