Meet Rita Wilder of Rita K. Wilder Photography in Flower Mound

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rita Wilder.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Hi there! My name is Rita! I’m the owner of Rita K. Wilder Photography. I’m originally from Northern Europe – Latvia. I started photography when my first son was born. I didn’t want to miss all those precious moments with him, so I started documenting them. The more I took photos, the more I fell in love with photography. My friends and family started noticing my work and asking me to photograph them as well.

I specialize in Newborn, Maternity, Child and Family Photography. My main focus is on Newborns. When my second son was born I became obsessed with creating things for Newborn Photography. I was knitting and sewing outfits for him while I was awaiting his arrival. I even built furniture and felted little rugs. I became known in photography community for creating my own props. I create most of the props for my sessions, making every Newborn session unique.

My style is light and airy. I love simplicity in the images, focusing on what matters the most. I combine posed and candid shots in my sessions. I love to be able to see everyone’s face and also the interaction between people. I get very excited to meet my clients when it’s time for their sessions because I am a people person and it is fun to hear their stories!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Photography has never been easy for me. I had to learn how to wear many different hats and become great at marketing, Photoshop, accounting, web design, prop design, communication, time management and scheduling. I am self-taught; doing most of these things by watching videos and spending countless hours on the computer researching or talking to other photographers.

When my one year old was born I never went back to photography and started a full time job just to realize that my passion was to photograph people. There is no a better feeling than seeing your images hung on the wall. I love the ability to freeze people’s memories

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Rita K. Wilder Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
Rita K. Wilder Photography specializes in Newborn, Maternity, Family and Child photography. I am known for building and creating my own props. I sew and knit newborn outfits, felt rugs, paint backdrops, build furniture, make flower arrangements, etc. I have even made my own maternity dresses. If I can think it, I can probably make it! I think this ability sets me apart from other photographers. My images are light and airy. I love to use different colors to make my work stand out.

I’m so proud of where I am now. In 2014 I was interviewed by a local Dallas News Station – CW33 News. I was actually going to my first session ever when a reporter stopped me. They asked me where I would like to be in a few years and I said: I wish I could have my own studio. I had had only one newborn session back then and it was my own son. I knew nothing about photographing newborns and I was just learning Photoshop. Now I look at myself, an expert in Photoshop, having my own home studio and I am the creator of most of my props. When I look at my own work it makes me smile. It’s not perfect and it will never be because of the constant learning, but it is something I am very proud of.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I think meeting my husband and having my children has been the biggest luck of my life! I met my husband traveling in Europe. I never thought I would end up in The United States, living here and doing what I love the most! I started my whole photography journey after my children were born. Without my family I wouldn’t be where I am today.
