Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Khan.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jay. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started off working as a dishwasher and kitchen assistant at Texas Tumbleweed in Addison while I was attending college. Eventually, I was promoted and held the general manager position for six years. I continued to grow in the restaurant management realm and I was responsible for opening many restaurants throughout the country. In 1994, I became a regional manager at Landry’s Corporation. Soon after arriving at Landry’s I met and worked with chef RV for nearly ten years. In 2004, we decided to open our own restaurant, RJ Mexican Cuisine, where we have seen the restaurant flourish.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The challenges I’ve been presented with in running and owning a business have allowed me to learn, grow and ultimately come out on top by successfully managing a business to profitability. For that, I’m thoroughly grateful for any setbacks that come my way.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We opened RJ Mexican Cuisine about 14 years ago as an upscale Mexican concept at the center of the West End district in Dallas. We are proud to say every single dish and cocktail is created in-house from scratch. Chef RV and I aren’t afraid to play with the menu and always look for new trends we can incorporate.
What were you like growing up?
Jay Khan was born in Karachi, Pakistan but spent most of his childhood in Michigan. His passion for the culinary business is driven by the challenge of opening and successfully managing businesses to profitability and creating a positive experience for each guest.
