Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Bellamy.
Robert, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After attending Art School, I started doing a lot of rough nail sketches for people’s yards. I had also worked at two different, large Nursery’s in Dallas. one quite famously called Lamberts; on the weekends. all of this and the love of architecture created a space for me with my graphic abilities to pursue coursework in landscape drafting. From this point, it was being a glorified yard boy doing jobs and connecting with new clients that has flourished for the last 40 years.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Yes, having to pay bills is always a rough road but; I have developed from having a small office in my home with myself and an assistant to having five employees for installments and a team in the office. It is all about creating an artscape that is both beautiful to look at and creates a lifestyle for my clients.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Robert Bellamy Design – what should we know?
People who enjoy my residential landscape style always seem to enjoy and comment on my enhancing of the architecture of the home and adding in a few surprises in the garden which always make it a bit unique and I dare say whimsical. This attention to detail on the architectural side really helps satisfy my artistic side from my college days as well as my passion for recycling and creating a showcase unexpected items in the garden.
I would say that I am proud of the fact that many of the clients I work with, I have worked with them on two and three homes. It has created a history of working together, and developed an evolution of design with our likes and dislikes. It is wonderfully rewarding to see the homes that I have landscaped, that have kept stylistically the same landscape and have developed over the last forty years.
Overall, it is the sense of surprise and whimsy that leaves me on a happy note.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
As has said “it takes a village” my village has happened to be the artisans, sub contractors welding people, stone masons, wood workers. Many of whom I have worked for decades who have helped execute the features of my designs and we tend to educate each other with how to build each individual item and keep it up to snuff with new materials and new ways to develop construction in today’s ever changing world.
