Meet Roberto Castellanos of Avior Jewelry in Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roberto Castellanos.

Roberto, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Three generations of jewelers later, I decided to take on the family trade. Moving from Los Angeles to Dallas my family opened a jewelry store. My grandfather was a master jeweler as well as my father and most of my uncles really. I started my first job as a jeweler as soon as I found out I was going to be a father to this now 6-year-old boy.

My father was and is my teacher. I began with polishing and refurbishing jewelry under his wing. After a few months of doing so, I turned my attention to fine watches. Continuing with refurbishing, I was able to learn how to cosmetically restore them basically bringing them back to factory finish after being previously enjoyed. Working with brands like Rolex, Omega, Cartier, Audemars Piguet, etc. It got to where I got so good that was all I was working on.

Throughout the years I’ve always enjoyed photography. Just as a hobby, nothing too crazy but I did start taking before and after pictures of my work on watches. It’s amazing what art it is to be able to refurbish the conditions of precious metals and stones. The reactions that people get are my favorite. They would literally lighten up seeing their pieces come back to life. I was able to create a portfolio of my work. Not only showing what I am capable of on the workbench but also with the photography I would take of these high-end fine watches and jewelry.

Basically collaborating my hands with my eyes. I don’t even see what I do as “work” if anything I like to classify it as Art. I’ve been able to create a career out of the knowledge that I am still acquiring with the help of my father. Using his old-time knowledge as a Master Jeweler and implying my own methods to create a balanced work ethic.

After working with my father next to me for a few years, some things happened and he left the state. Moving to San Francisco, California to accept a better-paying Master Jeweler position. From that point forward, I lost my teacher and had to learn other things with a more improvisational approach. I remained in the same position for another few years before I had come to realize that my employer was toxicity to my life. It became a nightmare so I had to leave. From there, I did contract work with some watch dealers around the city whilst overseeing a small Spanish-based Jewelry store at the Galleria mall. Life moves so fast sometimes you run out of breath trying to keep up with it. It was after two years of me leaving that toxic employer that I was given the opportunity to join the team at Avior Jewelry.

After working with Avior Jewelry for a few months, I knew we were in need of a Master Jeweler. I took a little trip to San Francisco to convince my father to come back to Dallas. He was welcomed with open arms and immediately made his mark to become a key member of our team. I’ve learned so much working for this company that they really do feel like family to me. I don’t know if they realize how much it means to me to be a part of this legacy.

Has it been a smooth road?
Yes and no.

Reason for yes: I have my family who has literally three generations of knowledge. My father has also been such an excellent teacher. I also have this amazing son who has been my inspiration to keep going.

Reason for no: Life happens sometimes. It knocks us down with some instances it being a lot harder to get back up.
