Today we’d like to introduce you to Robyn Bone.
Robyn, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I always knew from an early age that I wanted to be a counselor. I was not always sure on how that would look but I knew I wanted to own my own business one day and help people. It was through my experiences with family, friends, and job opportunities that I was blessed to be able to accomplish my dream by opening Family Matters Counseling Center.
Family Matters Counseling Center got started when I was in my Master’s program and started it initially as a Career Counseling Center that focused on assisting high school students, young adults, and seasoned adults through times of career decisions and transitions. After receiving my Professional Counseling credentials, I wanted to broaden the business on a more holistic approach that focused on all areas of change. I have always loved the movie Family Matters and when deciding on what I wanted to call the business I knew it was a perfect fit! Even though we offer more than family counseling I wanted to put a message out there that everyone in the family matters. I realized that all people and all families have struggles, but resolution can be found! I wanted to make my services widely offered and accepted that “family” is not always the same for everyone so therefore people identify who is in their “family system”.
At Family Matters Counseling Center, we strive to work with individuals, couples, and families on topics that sometime may hold us back from reaching our life and relationship goals. That is where I created the tagline, “Creating Change and Inspiring Purpose”. I believe that through change a person can create their future and hopefully live out their purpose in life.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part it was a smooth road. I read several books, consulted with several people, and learned from watching mentors on things I wanted to adopt but also change to fit my style. I also talked to several people who had a diverse background in business and I figured I would start with my network and ask for help from those within my circle before turning to other experts.
This allowed me to build a website and learn coding and SEO. It also enabled me to market myself in a way that I wanted to make sure people knew what was expected if working with a counselor and my practice and felt comfortable browsing the webpage and asking for follow up.
One of the struggles I would say that sticks out to me was knowing the market value, the income brackets in each area, and knowing overall the value of my skills and services offered, Overtime I felt more confident in running a business; after all I am in the helping industry so I wanted to help everyone! So what I did to keep the balance was offer monthly awareness campaigns where a portion of our profit support an organization each month.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood would be when my family would get together on a normal weekday evening and play games and wrestle on the floor. I always remember playing “airplane” on my mom’s legs and thinking how blessed I was to be with family. We did not have to go out and spend money or have all of the latest things; all that I needed was time with family. This is where I probably learned that “family” and belonging in whatever context that meant was the most important thing and all I needed in life.
