Today we’d like to introduce you to Rodesia Scott.
Rodesia, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a young girl, I knew I had a different purpose in life. At young tender age of five, my mother (Lynn) was murdered. I was raised by my grandmother in the West Dallas projects. She ensured that I had a fair shake in life by allowing the village to have a hand in my upbringing.
During my senior year in high school, death hit close to home again when my brother was murdered. I knew at that moment I had to do something other than what I saw everyday. I refused to be a statistic of my environment. I enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 19 and I served 14 years. After moving back home, I started a small web-based business selling virgin mink bundles. I knew that wasn’t enough and made a two-year goal to open my beauty supply store. I opened the door of Lynn’s Beauty Depot on June 20, 2020, Juneteenth weekend in the middle of a pandemic. It’s been a ride. I’m still learning and growing everyday. The community has been a great support system every step of the way.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been smooth at all. Because of COVID, I had the hardest time securing a space. One space I fell in love with and couldn’t close on the space. Most of the product distributors were closed so I had a hard time with stocking the store. Obtaining accounts has been an ongoing struggle as well.
Lynn’s Beauty Depot – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My beauty supply store is a safe space! I am one of very few beauty supply store owners that have local entrepreneurs products on my shelves. I have a small business Saturday event every Saturday at the store. I give other small businesses the opportunity to sell these products in my store for free.
What I am proud of is the opportunity I give to others is a way for me to give back to the community by providing them a different platform.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment is my grand opening! I literally opened my business in the middle of a pandemic.
