Today we’d like to introduce you to Roger Kitzmiller.
Roger, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I got started because one day I was tired of working 2 jobs. I sat down and prayed for God to send me some kind of sign to help me out of my situation. I wanted to spend more time with my kids and I didn’t want to be so worn out when I was with them. So, I sat down at my computer and started checking my email and I came across businesses to start. I saw Home Inspections as one of them. I thought to myself… this shouldn’t cost too much to start up. So I started doing research on it. Calling multiple companies that franchise to see what they required. Once I saw that it was cheaper to start my own company then to franchise with another company. I set out to get my license. I made a few friends in the industry from my class and some of the teachers and they have helped me out along the way. I appreciate those people. They have helped me learn more and more as I go through my inspections. Today, I feel things are definitely moving in the right direction. I’m getting work. It’s not as consistent as I would like but, I pray every night for more inspections to come in… and God provides. It may not be every day but, a few a week here and there. I have more time for my kids now. I may not be making the money I want yet. But, I know and have faith that it is coming.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting a new business is extremely hard. Every decision falls on me. Success or failure there’s no one else standing there but me. I had to step out on faith and leave both my jobs in order to really put everything in to making my business work. I prayed every night that God would open a door, show me the path, and bless this new journey. He did exactly that. It’s been two years since I made the decision to start my business and I’m so glad I did. That isn’t to say that every now and then I don’t feel a bit of worry. But all things are possible with God.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I named my business A&T Home Inspections after my kids – Ava & Trey. I specialized in residential and commercial inspections with a focus on customer satisfaction. In this industry word-of-mouth is everything and it’s certainly helped my business grow. My customers rave about my detailed and easy to read reports. I’ve actually had customers postpone their inspection just to make sure they were able to book with me personally. It really feels great to know that people appreciate my work and are eager to recommend me to friends and colleagues.
What were you like growing up?
I was shy as a child. I didn’t really have too many friends but the ones I did make are life-long. As I grew older I discovered my talent for sports. I played on great baseball teams and was invited to try out for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Eventually I got over the shyness and learned to be more outgoing when the situation called for it. I credit everything that I am to my mother, Brenda. She raised my brother and I alone and taught us to be strong and independent men.
