Today we’d like to introduce you to Rome Madison.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in Denison, TX and throughout my life, I stood by and watched the school-to-prison pipeline take so many of the guys I grew up with. I just wanted to do something to interrupt that pattern for young people who grew up in a single mother home on welfare as I did. I started speaking in schools, churches, and prisons and eventually teamed up with a group of people and we created a reentry program for ex-offenders called The Second Chance Ministry where I taught entrepreneurial and life skills.
Professionally, I’ve spent my career in sales and won sales and leadership awards for every company I’ve worked for. I became a student of leadership and always noticed the difference between the sales superstars and everyone else. I became passionate about the professional development of talent in the organizations I worked for because I realized winning teams invest in their people and build a culture of leadership that empowers innovation and accountability.
Five years ago, I launched The Superstar Academy, a consulting firm for sales organizations. We turn average performers into superstars so sales managers and executive leaders don’t lose their bonus or their job!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The major shift in my life was dealing with unemployment for a year, while during the same time, my mother who battled mental illness most of her adult life spiraled into a life of homelessness.
These events gave me the resolve to do use every gift and talent God gave me to create an increase in my world. This is where the desire to speak and make a difference in the lives of others was birthed.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Superstar Academy story. Tell us more about it.
During the year of unemployment and my mother’s homelessness, I became a self-studied thought leader in precision medicine. I worked for the very first company that studied DNA mutations and gene expression in cancer cells in order to target cancer therapy, and I have been part of the leadership teams that stood up some of the most successful companies in the space.
Today I am an industry expert in the field of genomics or Precision Medicine and I work with healthcare startups to create commercial strategies, scale their business, and develop a sales process.
Outside the niche of precision medicine, The Superstar Academy works with corporations who feel pressure to improve results due to change or increased expectations of executive leadership. I deliver programs on EVERYTHING SALES! Sales leadership, sales enablement, closing more sales and effective leadership culture.
What sets makes The Superstar Academy unique is that we teach the mindset and habits of elite performers.
I am proud that we can speak to the best practices of elite performers on every level: the individual contributor, support staff, middle-management, sales leadership, and executives because I have experienced success on every level.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck at all. You make your own luck. We can only focus on what we can control because circumstances change each day. It is our attitude and habits that create the skills we need to be successful no matter what the day brings.
