Today we’d like to introduce you to Ron Tribendis.
Ron, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Sports have always been a passion of mine. I started off playing basketball and baseball as a kid. I transitioned into endurance sports post college. Becoming pretty competitive, doing over 25 Ironman over the course of 15 years of racing. I started an endurance sports coaching business as well as a sports medicine chiropractic clinic. As I retired from competitive racing, I left my coaching business as I felt I was more needed in the sports medicine realm. I felt that I coached my athletes and patients daily. And spending more time in the clinic is where I could help the most people.
I have always felt there is so much ego in sports medicine and medicine in general. Instead of helping the patient, everyone is more concerned that they know and think their profession is better than the other. No one is working together to help guide the athlete/patient. No one profession or one rehab technique can fix everything. My purpose/goal/ vision is to help athletes through the messy system of dealing with an injury. Being their quarterback and running the offense even if it isn’t me, that is the answer. Bringing all professions together. To truly work together for the betterment of the athlete/patient. We recently launched the #askrontee show on all our social media outlets. The number one purpose was to give back. To share everything I know over a 17 year career in sports, rehab and sports recovery.
So eight years ago, I had this discussion with my Business Partner and my day one friend from when I moved to Texas almost 20 years ago. Dr. Kipp Streff. And over a 5-minute meeting, we formed Performance Medicine & Sports. Medicine.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Wow, I can write a book on how many obstacles we have overcome. And there will be many more obstacles along the way. Here is the thing. Failing is part of the business. So if you are afraid to fail, being an entrepreneur isn’t for you. You can’t let you get you down. You fail, make corrections pivot, and move on. The biggest thing is being positive and trying to find the learning moment or positive something from every failure. A couple of general lessons that come to mind.
1. Keep your pack/inner circle tight. Being able to differentiate between who really has your best interest in mind. Or are they run by ego and self serving. Are they using you? This is extremely hard. You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. So make sure you are always evaluating who you are bringing into your life, business etc. One person with the wrong intent can bring down a business. And leave you with a huge mess to clean up.
2. Attitude always beats talent when hiring… Yes they have to be competent but if the person is very talented but attitude sucks or they are just negative. It’s not worth it. You spend so much time and energy trying to help them fit in.. It will hold you back. Instead, the person that is a team player, leader, positive. You can always train them up.
Please tell us about Performance Medicine & Sports Therapy.
Performance Medicine & Sports Therapy was founded eight years ago by myself and business partner, Dr. Kipp Streff. We wanted to create a true multidisciplinary sports medicine clinic. Not a clinic with a bunch of medical providers sharing space and claiming they work together. We wanted a clinic that all professions work together for the betterment of the athlete/patient.
I feel like we do this. It took a while to get the right team together. To get the right people that share the same passion. I feel like we are there as far as that is concerned. Our team is solid. And I can honestly say they are the best sports medicine providers around. And all of us working together is what makes us so good. It is our super power. The energy we bring every day. The passion for moving sports medicine forward without ego is unmatched.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I wouldn’t do anything differently. Every obstacle was a learning experience. Every failure has made me what I am today. They have all shaped my vision and purpose.
