Meet Roy Vance of Roy E. Vance / Abstract Artist in Richardson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roy Vance.

Roy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m an artist that lives in Richardson, TX. I went to school for art but abandoned that field for a more stable form of income. I got my start in the home décor industry in 1992. My work history includes art gallery management, selling furniture and assisting client with accessory choices for their homes. I took up painting again in 2005. It is something I am passionate about and it’s a great stress reliever. I am thrilled when I get news that my art has been purchased. It means so much to me knowing someone has chosen my work for their home or workplace. I have been commissioned to create pieces for clients in Tampa, Cleveland and Dallas.

I enjoy painting and I find great reward in creating a special piece for someone based upon their specific color scheme and/or decorating style. I use either gallery wrapped canvas or wood panel. I paint the sides of my work, so framing is not necessary. Depending on my mood (and my client’s tastes) I will add layers, textures and found objects for added visual interest. I like to try new techniques and experiment with different compositions. I believe that art, like life, is about learning, growing and sharing with each other. I hope you enjoy my art as much as I enjoyed creating it!

Has it been a smooth road?
One of the challenges is educating consumers why local original art is better than a reproduction that is mass produced in China. So many times the consumer has already spent their money on construction, furniture etc and there is little left in the budget for original art. It is sad to see a million dollar house, with beautiful furniture, fixtures, and lighting… only to be decorated with mass-produced art from a Big Box store. For a few bucks more, they could have had a one of a kind original.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Roy E. Vance / Abstract Artist story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialize in creating abstract art, specifically tailored for your home or office. If you need a single piece or a grouping… just let me know the size and color palette you want. ( I am familiar with Pantone, Sherwin Williams, and other color sources). I will create a few sketches and you sign off on the one you like. At that time, please feel free to let me know of any changes you may want. ( For example: Use fewer squares and more blue.) Many artists do not like to be told what to paint. I do not mind getting the direction of this sorts… after all, if you are paying for it, I want to give you something that you want.

With that being said, my “non commissioned” pieces are more intuitive… those pieces allow me a bit more freedom. They come from my heart and can vary in color/composition as my whims direct me. I just put on my favorite music and let the paint start to flow!

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I’ve seen many brick and mortar galleries come and go. The Internet has opened many opportunities for artists. So many talented people getting the opportunity to show their work on the web! However, this is a blessing and a curse. The positive side is that I have been able to connect with consumers across the country without ever meeting the buyer face to face. The downside is that there is more “competition” out there. Today’s consumer is more sophisticated and computer savvy. They can go outside of your local area to finds exactly what they want. They have more options to choose from and you have to be able to give them something special.

Pricing:

  • Commission pieces available. Pricing starts at .65 cent per sq. in. Ex: a 30 x 40 canvas=1200 sq. in. x .65= $780
