Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruby Pachall.
Hi Ruby, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have always had a slightly obsessive adoration for flowers. I went on a trip to Mexico and saw the most adorable little floral truck and I could not get it out of my head after I returned home. I decided to start research how to create a floral truck for myself. My late mother and myself (as a child) traveled to Mexico in a little yellow VW bus, and they’re some of my fondest childhood memories! The choice in vehicle was quite obvious to me.
I began taking floral classes with a florist and immersing myself in all that I could take in from florist. I spent a lot of time playing with flowers, which I truly enjoy.
Most people get joy from giving or receiving flowers! My wish for this truck is that people walk away feeling a little happier than they did when they showed up.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It most definitely has not been a smooth road, but I have learned a lot and a lot about myself. I originally hired a company to source the truck and build it out for me. The company went bankrupt about a year into the project (after numerous delays), and I was left out nearly $30,000 for my deposit and still without a truck. I decided to move forward, hiring out contractors to complete all of the work needed on a vehicle I sourced and had shipped from Minnesota. Honestly, there were times I wanted to quit; my stubbornness is probably the one thing that kept me going. I’m so glad I did!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Gypsy Lilac offers a hands-on experience for each customer, picking their flowers by stem and building them into their own creative floral arrangement. We also offer DIY floral classes for people who want to explore their creativity through floral arranging, are available for photoshoots (the red is a hit for Valentine Day and Christmas), and are available for hire for events where the host can choose up to 25 floral varieties for their guests to custom build a take-home bouquet.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My floral coach, Jane. The woman is a goldmine of information, spending 20+ years in the floral industry. She not only taught me about floral arranging, but the business side of the floral industry as well.
