Today we’d like to introduce you to Rusty Holloway.
Rusty, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always been into art and music, but my most recent venture has been starting my podcast, “Rusty’s Escape Pod.” I released my first episode in June of 2019 and am currently editing my next two releases, which will be episodes 24 and 25. I originally gained interest in podcasting after I started listening to Sam Harris’ podcast. It was originally called “Waking Up” back then, but he changed the name in 2019 to “Making Sense” after launching his meditation app, “Waking Up”. I found out about Sam by watching Joe Rogan’s podcast on YouTube. What’s funny is that I watched a handful of Joe’s podcasts before, but never just listened through an audio-only podcasting app. I found Sam very interesting and decided to dive into the podcast world by listening to every single one of his episodes. That wasn’t my original intent, but I thoroughly enjoyed his episodes and couldn’t stop listening! I found myself gaining more and more interest in listening to other podcasts and hearing different perspectives on many different things. I soon realized that I had a newfound passion to LEARN things instead of just seeking things for entertainment or to pass time. That’s also around the same time I started thinking more realistically about starting my own podcast. My initial thought was, “Since someone else’s podcast inspired ME to learn and understand different perspectives, I wonder if I could help extend that inspiration to others just the same?”
I try my hardest to listen to people with an open mind and to maintain an unbiased perspective throughout the conversation. I do this because I don’t want to seem like I’m trying to convince anyone to think as I do, I’m simply encouraging people to THINK in general. I’m basically trying to get people to think of things from another point of view, or even several points of view. Being a musician as well, these episodes I release are treated almost like songs. I get that same exciting feeling when releasing them, similar to releasing new music. I hope to be able to keep this going, because it helps me stay focused on writing, thinking, and learning. If you are interested in being a guest in the future, please send me a message via my Facebook page or by email! Rustydoespodcasts@gmail.com
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Sometimes it can get a little overwhelming with all of the editing and trying to get things released in a timely fashion. Still, the other scary part is making sure the episode has something of interest for almost anyone!
Rusty’s Escape Pod – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I sit’s just what my description says on my podcasting profile – “A podcast about anything and everything — The human experience.”
I want to talk to people and understand what makes them tick. What problems they think about, how they deal with those problems, how they see the world, etc. A lot of podcasts out there are entertaining or political or educational or comedic or whatever. I’m somewhat trying to mesh it all together, but to focus on the guest and their perspective. I do solo episodes every now and then and offer up my perspective as well. I typically encourage anyone who disagrees or has a rebuttal to reach out and talk to me about it. I’m not married to any idea or outlook and try to remain agnostic to just about anything within reason.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I don’t exactly know what would specifically constitute “success” to me in this venture, but as long as I’m making someone think in a way they otherwise wouldn’t have, that would likely equal success to me—also laughter. Causing laughter is another great success!
