Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruthie Murry.
Hi Ruthie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve wanted to be a pastry chef since middle school! I’ve always loved baking, but that is when my passion for baking was really solidified into a career path. I knew that I wanted to be a pastry chef and one day own my own business in my hometown, Burleson, TX. Following high school, I attended Johnson & Wales University.
In 2015, I graduated with my Bachelors of Science in Baking & Pastry Arts and Food Service Management. I worked several different jobs after college, but none were in the baking or restaurant field. It wasn’t until I met my now husband, Jarod Murry, that I finally started baking as my full-time job. Jarod did all the research on Texas Cottage Food Law and figured out I could sell baked goods from home. So, he helped me convert my kitchen, dining, and living room into a workspace to do just that! I quit my corporate desk job and started attending local markets and hosting pop-ups all over town. Nine months later, we had gained enough traction to open a storefront. Just under two years of being open, and we are about to expand! We never dreamed our little business would take off the way it has. We feel blessed to be where we are in such a short amount of time.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road! Five months into business, Covid hit and we had to close the storefront and do strictly curbside pick up. It was a struggle at first, but we made it work for us. Little did we know that it would spark a whole new marketing strategy that we still use today! Every day when we opened at 3pm, we would announce our daily specials on our Facebook page (usually just two items that we don’t serve on a daily basis). Everyone would get so excited to see what we were serving, so once we opened the store back up, we had to keep the 3pm specials going! Nowadays, the special is posted around 3-4pm.
As you know, we’re big fans of Murry Bakery. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
On a daily basis, we specialize in gourmet cookies and bar cookies. We also have daily specials that include various flavors of cookies, bars, cake slices, cookie sandwiches, and mini pies. We take custom orders for decorated sugar cookies, cookie cakes, pies, cupcakes, and brownie cakes. We normally need at least three weeks notice for custom orders as our books fill up quick! The thing that sets us apart from the rest is that everything we make is made from scratch. We use real butter in everything and we don’t skimp on quality. The first things people say when they come in are, “it smells amazing in here,” and “those cookies are huge!” We pride ourselves on serving quality baked goods and hope to expand our offerings as we expand our bakery space. We are proud to be the sweetest spot in Burleson, TX!
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Watching others try our cookies for the first time makes me so happy. Seeing the joy on their face lets me know that I’m on the right path and where I need to be.
