Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Cagle.
Ryan, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
When I became pregnant in 2014 with our first child, I knew I wanted a natural childbirth, though not for the reasons I choose it today. I reached out to a cousin who had delivered her children naturally and asked what next steps I should take. She told me that first and foremost I needed Midwifery care and a Doula. The first person we hired was our Doula. She was a perfect fit for our needs and soon after we hired our Midwives. Our Doula offered a discounted childbirth education link for Birth Boot Camp so that’s what my husband and I chose. We selected the online classes because we felt it met our schedule needs the best. At 37 weeks and 1 day, I awoke at 2:30 am to my water breaking! BAM!! I woke up in my very own Hollywood movie, water breaking full on like you see in the movies! I was in shock!! While the majority of women will experience their water breaking as a slow trickle over the course of a few days or by their care provider breaking it, some women will experience the gush! We still had FIVE of our childbirth classes to go!! I text my Doula and told my hubby to go ahead and sleep while he could.
I got out my Birth Boot Camp curriculum and started cramming like crazy!! I labored at home until about 8:30 am when we talked to my Doula and she said we needed to go to the hospital NOW. We arrived and got into our room at 9:30 am, our Midwife came in and checked me and informed us that I was 10cm and Baby was about an inch inside! They ran the bathwater and I got in the tub at 10:00 am. I pushed out our sweet little boy at 10:16 am and fell IN LOVE with birth! From that moment on, I knew I wanted to help other women realize that they didn’t have to take a back seat to their pregnancy, labor, and birth. I trained with CAPPA as a Doula in April 2016 and then certified as a Birth Boot Camp Childbirth Instructor in October 2016.
I put a lot of thought into my name because I wanted it to have meaning for me. I prayed fervently to the Lord for guidance and as I was driving away from my parent’s house one afternoon, Esther 4:14 popped into my head – “Perhaps you have been created for such a time as this.” God created Esther and placed her in the position she was in to save her people. It felt like God was saying, “This is what I have done with you,” and at the same time, I felt like it fit so perfectly for all of us Moms who realize how masterfully we were created.
I decided on the lighthouse as my logo because as a birth worker, we are not the Captain of the ship but rather the steady point on which the couple can rely on to be there throughout the storm, the light that helps guide them.
I added Birth Pool Rental to my services in January of 2019 after we welcomed our youngest (now two) into the world in our bed safely in our home, surrounded by our Midwives and Doula. Our plan had been to deliver in the birth pool, but he was ready to make his entrance before it was ready.
Has it been a smooth road?
In the beginning, I was also working full time as an Executive Assistant. With my work schedule, I felt like it was hard to devote the appropriate time to my birth work. After being laid off in 2018, I felt it was God making my path clear. This is what he had given me a passion for and now my time was free to work on my business. Thankfully this area is so supportive of learning about birth and the different options for labor.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I LOVE teaching Birth Boot Camp Childbirth Classes! Getting to spend that time delving into everything birth with couples and helping them to understand and not fear birth. I teach a 10 week Comprehensive class, a 6 week hospital class, a 4 week home/birth center class, as well as some other more specialized complimentary classes.
Recently I had the great honor of being a Doula for a repeat Birth Boot Camp couple. They took my 10 week class with their first child but had some complications, which caused her to have an emergency cesarean early. For their next pregnancy, they took my 6 week hospital class and requested that I be their Doula as well. They were striving for a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean). When the time came, Mommy and Daddy both did a fantastic job and I cried tears of joy when she got her VBAC and their sweet little one entered the world.
I pride myself on being able to alleviate some stress off a couple’s plate by delivering their birth pool and all necessary supplies related to the pool by the 37 week mark. I provide instructions on how to use everything and clients are free to call me with any questions. Regardless of whether the baby comes at 37 weeks or 42+, there is no additional fee and the pool is picked up within 72 hours of delivery so the family can all enjoy being together. If the pool isn’t used as planned, like myself who didn’t have time because the baby was ready FAST or if Mom and Dad decide to deliver in a different spot, a 50% refund is given, minus any liners that have been opened. I don’t want people to worry about eating the cost when the pool wasn’t actually used.
Currently I offer Birth Boot Camp Childbirth Classes and Birth Pool Rental. I am not taking new Doula clients at this time.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Absolutely! Fort Worth is a phenomenal area for businesses like mine. We have amazing Midwives and Doctors who believe in working with couples to give them the birth experience they desire. While our city is a great place for this, we could always improve the respect given to care providers that don’t follow the “norm” and believe in a culture where mothers are encouraged to trust their bodies rather than fear it.
