Meet Ryan Rand of Panther City Leather in Near Southside

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Rand.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started doing leatherwork 3yrs ago after being introduced to it by a friend and local knifemaker.

I was working a full-time corporate job and decided to take the leap earlier this year to work full time as an artist/designer.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It was not very smooth at all!! I was traveling overseas frequently for work, and was struggling to manage my growing work queue for what I considered a hobby at the time.

As my experience in the craft grew, I decided to take it more seriously. I started spending all my free time practicing, learning, researching, and destroying some leather along the way.

Panther City Leather – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I make one off pieces for people out of leather and other media. If it can be sewn, I’m your dude.

I mainly make small fashion goods like belts, wallets and handbags, but my specialty is that I do a little of everything and that I use a lot of exotic leathers and dye techniques.

I’ve done everything from oversized watchbands to custom fabricated leather motorcycle accessories to custom clothing and footwear.

That diversity in the trade is what I’m most proud of and what sets me apart.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
That’s a tough question.

Success to me is being comfortable with the amount sustainability you’re receiving in direct comparison to your personal effort.

Also knowing when to stop and switch gears to realign those efforts.

Hard work.
Perseverance.
Being self-aware.
