Meet Ryan Sprague of Pavlov Visuals in Oak Cliff

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Sprague.

Ryan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a creative professional with a life-long addiction to art and music. At 12, I picked up a drum set and started playing music with my brother/business partner (Calvin Sprague). It was until high school when we started taking music more seriously as we became addicted to the creative process of writing and playing music. During the process, we realized we needed professional art to help resemble our brand and pitch to record labels. Instead of finding the chump change to hire an artist, we decided to explore and create our own. That’s when Calvin and I picked up our first copy of the Adobe suite and immediately fell in love with the unlimited possibilities we were able to explore in. Once we were able to find our niche in creating art, we were approached by other artists needing the same thing. Through word of mouth, we were able to spread quickly and take on projects as a full-time gig.

In 2005, Calvin and I started Pavlov Visuals, a design company focusing on branding artists and businesses of all sorts. Today, we’ve had the opportunity to work with prominent artists/brands such as Michael Jackson, The Rolling Stones, Bruno Mars, Target, Reebok and many more. We haven’t stopped since as our goal is to help clients find their voice in their brand.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We’ve gone through quite a bit of learning curves through the process. Setting client expectations and knowing which clients to take on and which to avoid (being able to spot red flags) is important as you want to enjoy the work you do.

Pavlov Visuals – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
As we started out in the music side of things, we had created a pretty prominent staple in the music merchandise industry. Through experimentation in our personal work, we have grown to find a passion for illustration and branding. Our style has been able to set us apart to where we are specifically hired for it.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Doing something that you love and being able to sustain a healthy life throughout it.

Criteria: Find out what you enjoy in the creative process and exploit it. Eventually, you will be noticed and hired for it.
