Today we’d like to introduce you to Sakina Khalif.
Hi Sakina, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Unlike most businesses, Fragaria Treats mostly started because I was trying to pass an interview. I was about 10 minutes into my interview for Onezo Texas when I was asked about my long-term goals. After contemplating for a second, I had come to the conclusion that my greatest goal was to run my own cafe. However, running a cafe takes so much time, money, and skill that I wasn’t willing to admit I didn’t have- yet. Thus, I answered to “run my own dessert shop,” and the rest was history. The manager interviewing me was oh so kind to offer me not only the job but the opportunity to be a vendor. Two months of brainstorming later I had come up with Fragaria Treats, a sweets pop-up shop that centers strawberries as its main focus.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have been fortunate enough not to have any major setbacks. However, I would be a liar if I said money hasn’t been a slight problem. Since Fragaria is a pretty new business, trying to figure out how to supply my business with the correct materials and still buy essentials for my myself was a bit hard at the start. Thankfully my mom has been my rock as well as other friends and family. To me, community is important to have at any stage of life, let alone when you are facing a little hardship. I am grateful to have been shown it at such a pressing time.
As you know, we’re big fans of Fragaria Treats. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
As stated previously, Fragaria Treats centers strawberries as one of its main ingredients. In fact, the name Fragaria hails from the genus of strawberries. We provide desserts such as Strawberry Mousse, Strawberry Brownies, and Strawberry Cookies in pink and twee packaging. Fragaria gives Instagram-worthy treats that are more than delightful to eat.
What do you think about luck?
Timing has been one of my greatest adversaries in the past year. Before I landed at my current job, I had been bouncing from job to job without much of an outlook for the future. As opposed to a lot of my peers from high school, I had decided that college ultimately wasn’t for me. Every day felt a little aimless, but I was never wise enough to admit that. So, once I started seeing the steadfast ambition of my friends, it made me want to do the same. I truly believe if I hadn’t applied to Onezo and interviewed when I did, I would never be where I am. In my heart, I know every second of my life has lead me to where I am now as well as somewhere greater. Who knows? Maybe Fragaria will have its own cafe sometime soon.
