Meet Sam Mulroy of Diesel Fitness in West Village

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Mulroy.

Sam, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was a personal trainer about to graduate from SMU in 2001 and only had one job offer I considered attractive.

One of my clients asked why I didn’t start my own gym and I responded with “I just need a business partner.’ He signed on and 5 gyms started and 4 sold later here I am with one left!

My last location is such a unique mix of culture and energy in the perfect location I don’t think I will ever sell it.

Has it been a smooth road?
Nothing worth having ever comes easy. 2008-2010 saw a double combo of recession with a whole new batch of competition.

Looking back, it was the best thing that could have happened to me and my business. I learned to persist without exception and adapted my business plan to focus on bringing in independent trainers who in turn bring their own clients.

That’s the secret for success at this current location.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Diesel Fitness story. Tell us more about the business.
Diesel Fitness is a small gym concept that feels like a big gym. We do this through the spacing of the equipment and including turf and outdoor areas to workout.

I personally specialize in training Major League Baseball players now but the gym as a whole is known for being the “Cheers” of fitness centers. Everybody knows your name.

I am most proud of the community of the gym. I hear all the time that CrossFit has “boxes” that are such a strong community and I just chuckle. We have had 2000 members with that focus for over 10 years. Way before it was trendy.

I think we are unique in the industry with the way we appeal to all facets and demographics of fitness. If you are a power lifter we have 6 racks. Love cardio? 35 pieces and 50+ monthly classes. Like to flip tires and push sleds? Got that covered too!

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
My industry is heavily trending towards more technology and I am fighting that. I feel more space in the gym is the key, not more plugged in.
