Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Hoover.
Hi Samantha, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I always knew I loved hearing people’s stories, what makes them tick, why they feel the way they feel, but it wasn’t until undergrad that I discovered psychology and therapy as a profession. Deciding to pursue counseling as a profession was both scary and exciting, but after graduating in 2020, I’ve experienced a lot on this side of a degree that has been incredibly rewarding. Since graduating, I’ve been in private practice, seeing adolescents and young adults who are struggling with identity, purpose, anxiety, and the multiple transitions from high school to college, college to career, and single to married.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not a smooth path, but I’m not sure any road in life is all that easy. I struggled a lot with imposture syndrome, questioning how someone like me was helping people. I struggled a lot with finding my path in this huge field of counseling and not comparing my skillset to my colleagues and friends, but rather allowing and accepting myself to be different. It wasn’t until I really sat down and asked myself what kind of work I enjoyed doing that I found my path–adolescents and young adults struggling with identity and adjustment.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor who specializes in anxiety and depression treatment for Gen Z and Millennials who are struggling with life transitions, career, and relationships. I also do career counseling across the lifespan, which is helpful to those either trying to figure out what kind of career they would be best suited for and for those in management trying to learn how to be more effective with their team. Because of my focus on mental health and career, I’m able to take into account the overlap between mental health factors like burnout and depression when it comes to career issues.
With adolescents and young adults, a big struggle I’ve noticed is feeling like you don’t belong or feeling like you have no direction. Sometimes it can feel really isolating being a young adult because all your peers are starting to go down their own path, leaving you wondering if the steps you’re taking are the right ones. I come alongside my clients to help them navigate their story and find direction. This path may include a career change, college, dating or marriage, family troubles, or friendship breakups. I don’t think I need to mention how difficult it is to find friends as an adult. I use Instagram a lot to spark conversation about these things if you’re interested in hearing more about these transitions.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
The food and coffee scene is probably my favorite part of DFW. There’s something for everyone and it truly never gets old. But the worst is definitely the traffic… more specifically the very unfriendly Texan drivers. No shade, but…
