Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Plasencia.
Samantha, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started fashion design while starting college in 2004. I had no idea it was offered when it came to a degree. My parents had not graduated high school so continuing education was not something that we spoke about whatsoever. Being creative was something that interested me as far as an expression so fashion was the route I took. I have been designing for over ten years now and have showcased with many other talented designers, I create custom garments for clients, and also sell online. I was a contestant on the Lifetime hit series Project Runway which was a surreal experience. I made it halfway through and when I spoke to the producers they said I was just “too personable.” I definitely can say I kept true to who I was and have gotten much work after the show and still continues being years later. I work full time in retail merchandising to keep a steady income and design for clients and produce garments for e-commerce. I am currently a full-time student and getting an MA in Adult Education. It is basically anything eighteen and above for continued education or post-secondary school. I have always helped others and I want to be a mentor and get others inspired to follow their dreams.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I always find being told no or not accomplishing something the way you planned the first time as a learning experience. It makes you smarter and stronger for the next task. I tried out for Project Runway three times. Each time being told no was a bummer, but I took back feedback and became a better person and designer. It made me try new things and establish my aesthetic as a clothing designer.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
My clothing started as avant grade piece and has transitioned to ready-to-wear. I make casual separates for the sporty girl who still wants to be feminine. I can definitely say that I have always been a tomboy but love being girly at the same time. Building that relationship can always set you apart from others and the way you carry your brand. I am proud that I can say many people from all over the world have seen my personality and designs and it makes me happy to inspire others.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was a typical adventurous kid. I loved playing outside and being imaginative. Our family didn’t have much money but as your child, you never see it like that and just play and go to school. My all-time favorite toys were polly pocket, barbies, and my power wheels jeep. I loved painting and drawing growing up and class projects were always my favorite because I could be as imaginative as I wanted. My father helped me with many projects which were always above and beyond what was asked. My father always told me to always put in 110 percent, so then I could expect great results. That statement has been true for me thus far.
