Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Thomson.
Samantha, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have always loved being creative, and when the pandemic forced us all inside, I needed something to keep me busy (and sane) so Dewey Design Co. was born.
I like to believe I inherited my creativity and love of making things from my grandpa. He was incredibly talented and would build these incredible inventions. He called me, my sister, and my cousin Dewey, Louie, and Hewey, after Donald Duck’s nephews, so it only felt fitting that my nickname and my grandpa be a part of what I create.
Dewey Design Co. is the culmination of all of the experiences I have had thus far in my life. I feel like each piece of who I am is translated in some way into my projects. I love to create, to be hands-on, and to share my love of creating with others. I originally was just making things for friends and family, but then friends of friends and complete strangers started reaching out so I created a platform where they could also find my projects.
I would not be where I am without the support of my friends and family who give me the courage to be vulnerable and put my creations out in the world.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not. As with anything, there are ebbs and flows. Dewey Design Co. is not my full-time job, so juggling DDC, a full-time job, as well as navigating the challenging couple of years we have had, it has not been easy. I have thought about throwing in the towel before, but every time I do, I realize that it has helped me find a creative outlet as well as provided opportunities for me that would not have been possible without my work with Dewey Design Co. I love what I do and I am grateful that people have given me a platform to express my creativity and try new things.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I create a lot of things. I will see a project or get inspiration and I run with it. I mostly make custom home decor (door mats, charcuterie boards, coasters) but the possibilities really are endless. My proudest accomplishment with Dewey Design Co. is the ‘It’s Cool to Be Kind’ line. I pick a charity and all proceeds for that launch go towards the charity. My most recent launch was a very personal cause and benefitted the American Cancer Society. Being able to do what I love and help others is the perfect intersection of what I have been searching for in a creative outlet. I am always looking for the next idea, how to improve my current projects, and how I can give back in doing so. Since I was a kid, my life has revolved around the arts. I started dancing at three, I was involved in musical theater growing up, and then for my 16th birthday I was given my first Nikon camera and I have been trying to combine my passions ever since.
When I am not working on projects with Dewey Design Co. I work in the Marketing Department for Kindred Homes and the Marketing Director for Pearl & Plum Boutique. I am also looking for additional freelance marketing opportunities to expand my portfolio of clients!
What are your plans for the future?
I am excited to continue to create and find new projects and opportunities. I am looking to expand on the ‘It’s Cool to be Kind’ campaigns and find new and exciting ways to generate excitement and give back to charities in the area. I am not sure what the future holds, but if the previous two years are indicative of what is to come, I can’t wait.
