Today we’d like to introduce you to Sami Bedgood.
Sami, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been baking with my mom since I was in elementary school. I’ve always been intrigued by decorated sugar cookies, but finally decided to try and make my own in 2017 when I was working nights at a hospital. It gave me something fun to do during that day when I was home alone. I started off just bringing cookies to work and offering to make them for events. Then, in May of 2018, I received my first order. It was after this order that I decided to make my hobby a small business! It’s been growing ever since!
Has it been a smooth road?
Starting my business has been really fun, but it hasn’t been easy. I am still working full time and running a small business on the side has proved to be more and more challenging as my business continues to grow. Late nights, early mornings, and little sleep is becoming the norm around my house. Saying no and setting limits for myself are other constant areas of struggle because I want to do everything and help everyone!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I run a home-based bakery, specializing in decorated sugar cookies for occasions such as birthdays, weddings, parties, graduation, etc. I love making face cookies (cookies of people’s faces) and dog face cookies (cookies that look like people’s dogs), which is one of the unique products I offer that sets me apart! I am most proud of my business when a client loves their cookies so much that they tell their friends about them. Word of mouth has been the biggest tool for growing my business over the past year. I love making people smile and cookies seem to do the trick.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Dallas is a great city to start a home-based bakery or other small business! Texas has Cottage Food Laws that regulate how you can sell your cookies, but as long as you do your research and stay within those guidelines there is plenty of room to grow a business. People here in Dallas are supportive of small businesses. I think many people are tired of paying large corporations and are excited about the opportunity to support local entrepreneurs. There are also many opportunities for Dallas-based people to get the word out and showcase their products through markets, social media, and platforms such as Voyage. When you find a small business that you like, the best thing you can do for them is to tell your friends and spread the word!
