Today we’d like to introduce you to Samia Anas.
Samia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have a Bachelors Degree in Home Economics and a Masters in Business Administration. As a mother of three young kids, I chose to stay home and be with them.
I’ve always had an eye for design. I remember as a kid, our family used to have a carpenter who would be readily available to us if we needed to have some carpentry work done. I would design tables/vanities/desks, etc. for family and friends and would get the carpenter to have them built. Everybody would love my work. (I wish I took pictures, but of course, phone camera was not a thing at that time and owning a camera was a big deal, which I did not have.)
After getting married, we were jumping from one city to another because of my husband’s study and work, I got a chance to live in a lot of rental homes, I would decorate them myself and every time people would ask me if I used an interior designer, and I would tell them no I did it myself. After moving into my own home, I completely renovated it, helped a lot of friends get theirs renovated, I would help them with decor, furniture placements, color schemes, even would move around a couple of furniture pieces from here to there (of course, with their permission) and it would make a big difference.
As people appreciated my work, a friend of mine suggested that you invest so much time and effort in helping friends, and their friends for their design needs, why don’t you do this as a profession. Before this, I never realized that passion can become a profession too. It’s then I decided to get my formal education in Interior Design. After completing my certification, I’ve been blessed to have landed on numerous interesting projects. My history of living and working internationally has developed my unique mindset and comprehensive sense of style. I love doing challenging projects and provide solutions to my clients for their design needs keeping the functionality aspect in mind.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a little challenging balancing work life and family. My family is a very important part of who I am.
I recently came across a term which I had no idea existed, it’s called “Creative Insomnia”. I am clearly sleep-deprived; but I am feeling on top of things, happy, and productive. The key point here is not to promote insomnia or the lack of sleep, but to highlight some of its most productive causes: ambition and creativity. My creative thinking keeps me up at night sometimes.
Keeping up with the changing trends in design industry sometimes can get tricky but that’s the most fun part of this business as well.
