Today we’d like to introduce you to Samuel Decker, Cesar Luna, and Cameron Crowley.
Doma Kid emerged as a collaborative effort between Denton musicians in 2017. They began slowly as an experimental power trio that performed in the Denton DIY scene, but as their musical vision expanded and crystalized, the music demanded the efforts of two more members. As a quintet, the group continued to invest their creative efforts into an increasing presence in the greater DFW music scene and dove into the production of their debut studio album 20XX.
Has it been a smooth road?
It took a while for us to form an identity and sound as a band. We spent a year finding a sound we were happy with in our songs. And just as that identity started to materialize in the spring of 2018, Joe Listrom (Keys/Synthesizer) and Cesar (drums) left the country, so we continued making progress in other ways. We shifted from performing to producing videos and writing new songs- all from different parts of the world.
Six months later Cesar came back to Denton, and we added Tim Cranford to the band lineup on lead guitar. We started taking production for the album seriously at the end of 2018. Joey was still working with us on the album remotely from overseas.
Self-producing the album at Cave Sounds, our home studio, afforded us full creative freedom. However, we were still limited to the equipment we had at the time. All together, it has taken us about two years to complete 20XX along with the music video for our single “Seatbelts”.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Doma Kid story. Tell us more about the business.
One-hundred percent of what we do as a band stems from us being a group of friends. We all have other gigs we do, but what makes this project special to all of us is that we all make time to get together and work on something bigger than us. We don’t put the conventional pressure on ourselves to be creative or do things we don’t feel like doing- we just do whatever we’re feeling that day and then a bigger picture emerges from that. I’d like to believe we all bring out the best in each other, even though we’re all from different backgrounds. Our philosophies in life and music are the backbone of who we are as a group of friends, and that spills over into whatever we create.
All of the songwriting for 20XX took place in my [Samuel Decker, lead vocals] last two years of studying film, and was inspired by my experience in the film and music industry and observing how technology and media was (and still is) changing the world as we know it. I tried to slowly open my eyes to the invisible forces and habits that were changing me at the time. I went through vulnerable phases of trying to be self-aware of my human nature while at the same time trying to connect with others on how I felt about the future of love, life, art and humanity at the time. The support of my close friends and bandmates is what drove me to keep pursuing the project even when progress was slow or I was filled with self-doubt.
On top of all of that, we’re known for our loud and energetic stage presence no matter where we play. All of us are lifelong musicians and artists, so we all bring a unique presence to the stage.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
