Meet Sara Stocksdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Stocksdale.

Sara, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have loved art for as long as I can remember, and it has been my dream to be a professional artist since I was little. I had been taking commissions and doing city projects for a few years in high school, and when I turned 18, I started planning a larger personal project. I started my business, Studio Sawasta LLC, and I spent about one year developing a tarot card deck which was successfully funded through Kickstarter as of March 2022. It is now a few months later, and about half the original stock has been sold. Ever since the Kickstarter was completed, it felt like my dream had finally come true. My website, www.sawasta.com, has been receiving more and more traffic with each passing day, and my social media has been gaining followers. I am still selling the tarot deck, as well as other pieces I have made. I do offer commissioned artwork in a variety of mediums, and nothing makes me happier than getting to do what I love every day.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the biggest struggles I faced was getting my work out there. Social media can be unpredictable, you have so much access to the world and yet it is so hard to be seen. It took months of trying, failing, and trying again before I figured out how to market myself and my business.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I love to pick up new mediums, and I have been studying art for several years now, and I am most known for my tarot deck as that was my largest and most successful project. I drew every single design myself based on the classic 72-card deck, and I am currently working on a guidebook to go along with it. One of the things I am most proud of is that I have found my own artistic style and that I still love creating art even though I have also started making it a career.

We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Something that most people do not know is that I am also a private tutor. I teach elementary-college math and SAT prep. I was a straight A student in High school, and I am maintaining that record now as a college student and member of the honors college at UH. I am currently tutoring independently and with Varsity Tutors, and I love teaching almost as much as I love art. I have about 30 students right now, and watching them succeed makes me happier than I can put into words. I’ve always been the type of person who wants to do it all, so most people who know me are not surprised that I basically have two businesses already.
