Meet Sarah Alexander

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Alexander.

Sarah, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up on a farm in the middle of nowhere TX until age 11, when my parents separated. Later, I inherited the family farm, which has been in my family since 1864. I find landscapes to be very inspiring to create soundscapes in my music.

As an avant-garde artist, it’s interesting juxtaposition-making music that’s not necessarily accessible inspired by a place that’s really not that accessible either, but I don’t think it’s directly apparent my work is inspired by farm life.

Has it been a smooth road?
Being a “female musician” as opposed to being seen as a musician. Musician is my preferred pronoun.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I teach voice, beginning-through intermediate piano, music theory and try to incorporate improvisational technique as well. I’m most proud when I have students that work hard and practice. That’s when we are both able to see results. I also learn a lot from my students, and I think that’s important.

I also really enjoy coaching voice students for auditions and am most proud when they are successful, of course! That’s a “win-win” situation! But the work always pays off, regardless, the work you put in will always pay off, not always immediately or in the way you expect.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I like the creative community the best. There are so many receptive people to work with. I would like there to be more financial support. Often, it feels we are a bit exploited.

Everyone but the musician makes money a lot of the time, but that’s evident in disciplines beyond music. Think about how many famous visual artists died poor, for example. It is what it is, and we all make the best of it because it is what we have to do.
