Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Hamilton.
Sarah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a kid, I grew up painting in my grandmother’s art studio, and for as long as I can remember, art has been a passion of mine. This passion led me to pursue a Bachelor’ of Fine Arts from the University of North Texas in 2011. From there, I became an art teacher for CFBISD and began instilling the love of art and creativity in my students. I loved teaching and watching my students gain the confidence to create.
However, once I had twins (Evelyn and Lucy), I knew it was time to direct my creativity elsewhere. I had been a hobbyist photographer but decided to slowly take on business. I have challenged myself daily ever since and have slowly built my passion into a career. Now I am able to share my creativity as I capture beautiful and organic moments for my clients.
Has it been a smooth road?
As a working mom with twin girls, building a business has definitely had its hiccups along the way. Although the creative aspect has always been there for me, I have had to learn the business side of things along the way. Luckily, I had my husband, a driven COO, to coach me through challenges and growing pains.
It has also taken me time to develop my professional style of working almost exclusively with natural light. I had to find my niche and make it stand out As an artist, I don’t think I’ll ever be content with my work, but for me, that’s a good thing because it keeps me from becoming complacent. I am constantly challenging myself to grow and learn and am always striving to improve any way I can.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Sarah Hamilton Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I specialize in family and lifestyle photography and embrace the beauty of natural light in my work. I think it’s also very important to capture the relationship over the smile and the personality over the pose. I love to document organic moments and find what makes each family unit special. People often feel vulnerable getting photographed, and sometimes that can deter someone from getting in front of a camera. Because of this, I always strive to always make them feel comfortable and confident during and after the session.
Life is a collection of moments and your photos tell your story. If you think about your personal favorite family photos from your own childhood, they aren’t the ones you’re fake smiling in because your brother just kicked you. They are the photos of you throwing the football with your dad, cuddling up with your mom, or building something with your sister. I strive to capture the physical and emotional connections that are dear to my clients and will resonate through the photos for years to come.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I am honored that I get to do what I love in a city that I love. I would say overall, when most people think of family photos, they envision the manufactured picture where the family is lined up smiling directly at the camera. That may be nice to some, but “cheese” isn’t my passion. Dallas is full of forward thinkers that embrace my vision and creativity, and this makes it a great place for my business.
