Meet Sarah Hixson of DFW

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Hixson.

Hi Sarah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I first picked up a camera in 2017, though my path into photography was a little unexpected. At the time, I was working as a dental ceramist, creating porcelain veneers for a cosmetic dentist. Our office wanted to elevate its marketing, so I was asked to photograph patients after their transformations for print and advertising. What started as a side responsibility quickly turned into a passion—I loved capturing the confidence and joy in people’s smiles.

From there, I began photographing outside of the office—families, newborns, events, and branding for businesses. I sought out mentors along the way who not only sharpened my technical skills—like lighting and studio work—but also taught me how to build and run a sustainable business.

Fast forward to today, I own a photography studio in Arlington, Texas, where I get to combine creativity and connection in all of my photoshoots. What began as an unexpected opportunity has grown into a thriving career, and I feel grateful that I get to tell people’s stories through my lens.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road, but every challenge has pushed me to grow. In the beginning, one of the hardest parts was learning how to communicate effectively with clients—making sure I understood their vision while also guiding them through the process with confidence. I also had to face the business side of photography head-on, like setting pricing that was both profitable and sustainable, which took some trial and error.

On the technical side, I’ve had to constantly evolve with technology, learn reliable backup systems to protect my work, and master lighting in different environments. Each of these hurdles felt overwhelming at first, but they’ve shaped me into a stronger business owner and artist. Today, I see those struggles as stepping stones that helped me build the foundation to thrive!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a portrait photographer, and my work really centers on capturing people at their best. whether that’s families celebrating milestones or professionals building their brands. I specialize in creating clean, modern, and elevated images that feel both timeless and full of personality.

What I’m most proud of is the experience I’ve built around my sessions. I don’t just show up with a camera, I create an environment where clients feel comfortable, confident, and celebrated. That’s when the real magic comes through in the photos.

What sets me apart is my unique background and approach. Coming from the cosmetic dental world gave me a deep appreciation for detail, precision, and aesthetics. I’ve carried that into my photography, combining technical skill with an artistic eye. Over the years, I’ve invested in mastering lighting, running a full time studio, and building a process that’s as professional as it is personal.

I believe photography isn’t just about the final image, it’s about giving people an experience that makes them feel seen, valued, and proud of themselves. That’s what keeps me excited every time I pick up my camera.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something that often surprises people is that I didn’t set out to become a photographer at all. I actually started my career as a dental ceramist and was very passionate about dentistry and designing porcelain veneers for a cosmetic dentist.

Most people see me now with a camera in hand and assume I’ve always been on the creative path, but my foundation was in the fine details of dental aesthetics and my history with being a painter. That background gave me a really unique eye for precision, symmetry, and beauty, which I now bring into my photography.

Another thing people might not know is that I’m just as passionate about the business side as the creative side. I love studying lighting and posing, but I also enjoy the challenge of building systems, evolving with technology, and creating a business that’s sustainable long term. It’s that mix of artistry and strategy that keeps me inspired!!
