Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Jo and Matthew Eversole.
Sarah and Matthew, please share your story with us.
I grew up in the farmlands of Indiana and Sarah has always loved flowers. We dreamed of farming together but it wasn’t until the recent birth of our daughter that we finally took the leap. She had some challenging health problems that meant Sarah needed to walk away from her data analyst position to stay home and care for her full time. During those months of transition, the flower farm was finally born. We finally had space in our lives to pour into the dream and we needed the beauty to feed our souls during a challenging time. A year later, we are still learning and getting our feet under us but we’ve come a really long way. We supply flowers to our community through flower-shares, co-op bouquets, a few weddings and some accounts with florists who value locally and sustainably grown flowers.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Our farm is an urban one, meaning, we can wave to our neighbors through the fence as we grow. It was challenging at first to figure out how to grow a lot of flowers in a small space and do it in a way that was kind to the land, the soil, and the plants themselves. We also had to learn exactly how the weather affected certain plants and we lost a few ‘crops’ along the way from transplanting them too early when it was raining or too late when the heat had already come. But as we get deeper and deeper into this journey and the fields explode in color, we know we made the right decision and are headed in the right direction.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Everbloom Fields – what should we know?
Everbloom Fields is a small urban flower farm just south of downtown Dallas. We specialize in providing seasonally and sustainably grown flowers to our community. Many of our flowers are native and heirloom varieties suited to our climate so they thrive without pesticides, growth regulators or chemicals harmful to pollinators and soil health. Our flowers are truly local: a product of our community belonging to our community.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
A passion for tending is central to our success, whether it’s tending the soil, the plant, the bloom or the person receiving our flowers. Successfully flower farming requires both a passion and a commitment at every step to do things in a meaningful way, a way that is free from harm so beauty can be shared to its fullest.
