Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Masefield.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sarah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have been in the beauty industry for 23 years. I have always felt that making people feel good was a passion that resides deep inside me. Helping people in any way has always made me feel good. Back in high school, I was the go-to girl my friends would come to when they needed their bangs trimmed. That was before I knew I wanted to do hair as a career. Shortly after high school, I was walking in the mall where I was approached by a man who asked if I would be his hair model. When he was done with me I felt so beautiful and I transformed into a new person. This feeling I had…is what I wanted to be able to give other people. I knew then that I wanted to be a hairdresser.
In this field, there is always something to learn. You can never stop educating yourself on techniques that keep you current with the styles and colors that clients want. I will always be educating myself to stay on trend with what is current and relevant. I have worked in every aspect of this field. I have been an apprentice, I have owned salons, I have worked behind the chair and helped others to learn.
What I have learned is the people who sit in my chair daily, tell me their stories, laugh and cry with me; is the reason I love being a hairdresser. They choose me, and I love that. I love my clients!
I believe the best compliment I can receive is someone else complimenting my work.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I am my own biggest obstacle. The strive for perfection is real. I always want to exceed the expectations of my clients. When I unveil my hair masterpiece there is always a small part of me praying that that person loves what I have done. I never stop worrying that I will not surpass their expectations. This part is something I believe is necessary. You always have to care if the client is happy.
