Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Ware.
Sarah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Oh boy, that is a loaded question. I have always loved taking photos. I remember being like eight and making my younger brother pose in the backyard while I took pictures. I even pretended to take photos when there was no film in the camera! But, as crazy as this sounds, I never knew it could be a career. I didn’t start taking photos professionally until after the birth of my daughter almost seven years ago. I was on a path in the insurance industry and wasn’t feeling fulfilled. It just happened that my husband bought me my first DSLR for Mother’s Day after she was born. I taught myself how to shoot manually, how to edit and by her first birthday, I was hooked. I decided it was that thing I had been missing. I then took the leap of faith, built a website and started booking clients. While I am nowhere near where I want to be, I am a lot closer. And I very proud of how far I’ve come and so grateful for all the people I have met along the way.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Haha!! Definitely not smooth! More like a ride on the Texas Giant and it’s halfway off the rails. For years, I tried to juggle my nine to five, raising my kids and being the best wife I possible. Oh and build a photography career. Did I mention I am a writer too? The curse of the multi-passionate! Most days it felt like I was failing miserably at all of the above. At the end of 2018, I left my “day job” and that has proved to be even more difficult than I imagined. I had spent many years in the industry I was in, and when I left, I started all over at level 1. And that has been very hard. My husband and I built a life where we were comfortable and now things are harder. We are both entrepreneurs and the stress can pretty be overwhelming at times. I won’t lie, some days I feel like throwing in the towel and going back to something comfortable. But I have this nagging feeling that won’t let me do it.
So, I keep trucking forward. I think for creatives it’s so hard anyway because you’re putting yourself out there with everything you do. Your art is your heart and soul, but when you are trying to also make it your bread and butter, well, let’s just say some days you want to hide under the covers. Pivoting careers is very hard. But I think for women it’s super difficult. You are still expected to do all of the mom things, running the house things and bring in a paycheck. No one really teaches you how to navigate running down a dream when you are a “grown-up” with all of the responsibilities that go along with it.
