Meet Savannah Kurka of Savvie Studio in Denton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Savannah Kurka.

Savannah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Savvie Studio is a home goods + accessories brand based out of Denton, Texas. I primarily focus on home goods and gifts that celebrate life, nature and the spaces that we share with those that we love. Savvie Studio started in 2013, shortly after The Dime Store opened. I had just taken a digital fabrication class at UNT (laser cutting, 3D printing, etc.) and was so inspired by everything happening within the creative community of Denton. I decided to invest my entire savings into a laser cutter and turn my small college apartment bedroom into a full blown laser cutting studio. The rest is history from there!

Has it been a smooth road?
Savvie Studio started while I was still in college and working a handful of part time jobs. I poured every spare moment into getting this business off the ground and was even late to my own college graduation because I was using my only day off to fulfill Etsy orders! Looking back on the beginning days of working multiple jobs at a time and filling orders through the wee hours of the night, makes me so grateful that I can now call this my full time job.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Savvie Studio – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Savvie Studio is a home goods + gifts brand based out of Denton, Texas. Through Savvie Studio, I aim to celebrate life, nature and the spaces that we share with those we love. I aim to create goods that spread happiness and boost confidence through modern, energy-filled designs.

I use the process of laser cutting to cut out wood and then alter it to create modern plant hangers and home decor. Many of my pieces also incorporate marbling, an ancient Japaneses water painting technique that creates one of a kind designs. I love that I am able to make hundreds of magnets or plant hangers yet, every single one is going to be unique.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I moved to Denton for college and never really thought, I would stick around. However, the creative community in this town is unmatched. It is a community of talented folks who choose to celebrate the success of others and help support one another any way that they can. It’s rare and I’m grateful.

I also love being within a quick drive of all that Dallas has to offer. From amazing markets, to great shopping or inspiring museum visits, DFW is a lovely place to call home.
