Meet Scott Bale of Natural Body Personal Training in North Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Bale.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I got started in the fitness business back in 1988. Back then, Personal Training was largely unregulated and you did not have to be certified, you just need to look the part. I worked at a local gym for 2 years where I worked my way up to “Head Instructor”. I left there in 1990 to go to work at Gold’s Gym. I barely made enough money to get by, but I learned a lot. In 1994, I decided to get certified and become an independent trainer. After a few months of driving from gym to gym and paying gym fees at several gyms, just so I could train people, I decided to open up my own private gym. So, I rented some office space in North Dallas in 1994 and I have expanded 5 times, but remained in the same building since then. After my original Certified Personal Trainer certification, I took several specialty courses for continuing education and eventually worked my way up to “Master Trainer”. The problem was, I didn’t feel like a “Master” or “Expert” at anything. I still felt like there was so much more for me to learn.

That is when, in 2012, I took the Corrective Exercise Specialist course from the National Academy of Sports Medicine. This course blew my mind and answered many of the questions that I had about why my back had hurt since lifting weights in high school football when I was 15. I couldn’t understand how I could be so strong in the gym, but drop to my knees in pain when I would reach for a pen on my desk. This course changed my career and my life. I was so impressed with this course, that I went back and took several of the same courses from NASM, that I was already certified in with the other organization. I finally worked my way all the way up to an NASM Master Trainer and I specialize in Corrective Exercise and Performance Enhancement. Now I feel like I have knowledge in a very underutilized aspect of the fitness world. Now, when I see a new client, the first thing we will do is a movement assessment to see how their body moves and look for any muscle imbalances. I use software that they download to their phone and they have access to every exercise needed to correct their movement compensations. Everyone needs Corrective Exercise, no matter if you sit at a desk all day, or if you are an athlete. You are beating your body up, one way or another. My career is so rewarding, because I see immediate results with clients everyday

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was not a smooth road. I knew how to be a trainer, but I didn’t know how to run a business. I don’t charge a membership fee. I only charge my hourly rate. I am lucky that I have very loyal clients.

Please tell us about Natural Body Personal Training.
I specialize in Corrective Exercise (injury prevention) and Performance Enhancement because they go hand in hand. I can improve performance by helping you move more efficiently. It is a lot like driving with the parking brake on. You can do it, but parts are going to wear out much faster.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Playing catch with my dad. He died in 1994.
