Meet Sean Hyman of The Logical Investor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Hyman.

Sean, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up poor, in an economically depressed small town in Arkansas. I didn’t know anything about money, and neither did most of my family. So what ended up being a career for me started out by just trying to figure out how to get out of poverty. That quest turned into a love and a hobby, and that’s what got me into the financial markets. My first stock brokerage job was with Charles Schwab, where I also later became a manager over a team of brokers.

Later on, I also worked in the currency market at a forex market making firm called FXCM (Forex Capital Markets). After that, I started writing newsletters through a publisher. In the earlier days, a forex trading newsletter at The Sovereign Society and later on a commodity-stock trading newsletter, and options on currencies newsletter as well.

Much later on, I also worked for Newsmax and now the Maven, where I predominately write stock market newsletters where I give buy/sell recommendations to my subscribers and the reasoning as to why we’re in them, etc. My current newsletter can be found at www.seanhyman.com.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I grew up poor, had no college degree. Didn’t technically qualify to gain entrance into the financial field but one HR lady in Orlando, FL took a chance on me, and it paid off for Schwab and certainly for me as well. Later on, I’d obtained more financial licenses than many in the industry and was well-qualified but not in the early days.

I’d obtained a Series 7, 63, 9, 10 and 3 licenses. Those are brokerage licenses, licenses to manage brokers and a forex/commodities license. Before it was all said and done, I was knowledgeable about stocks, commodities, and currencies… three different financial markets.

The Logical Investor – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I write a value investing newsletter that’s institutional like thinking, yet delivered on a level to where anyone can understand it. I’m a teacher at heart. So I like making things as simple as possible, which comes in handy to many who think financial terms sound like a foreign language.

The newsletter helps every-day people learn how to effectively analyze stocks to know if its a solid company or not and if it’s cheap or expensive. Much of it is based on Warren Buffett and Sir John Templeton’s methods of analyzing stocks.

It’s a true investing letter, withholding periods averaging 2-4 years, with some being a little longer or shorter than that time period.

What I’m most proud of is that I put the interests of my subscribers above that of my own interests and I convey the information in a way that a non-financial person can understand it. My motives and how easy I convey investing concepts are what I believe separates me from others.

Also, most institutional level advice would be far too pricey for the average person. I make this very affordable for them at only $197 per year or $19.99 per month, whichever way they prefer to pay.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
As a believer, success to me is first and foremost obedience to God. Secondly, it’s in being “others-focused” so that the world is hopefully a better place with me being born. And it’s to leave a legacy of godly financial stewardship not just to my family, but also to subscribers wherever they may be all over the world.

Pricing:

  • $197 for an annual subscription to my stock market newsletter
  • or $19.99 monthly, if they prefer to pay that way.
