Meet Sergio Santos of El Santos Studio in Bedford

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sergio Santos.

Sergio, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My mother got me started when she handed me my first box of crayons. It’s been a long, strange journey, but it’s far from over. Each year is no less interesting than the last, and the work keeps flowing and evolving. To attempt to answer the question, I got where I am today through bull-headed persistence.

My work is currently primarily shown at Central Arts of Bedford, but I also have a little corner at Doc’s Records & Vintage in Fort Worth. Aside from that I pop-up quite a bit at different events.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Anything worth doing is difficult. Being an artist is no different. What makes the bumpy road easier is a love of creation, and the infinite possibility to improve each day I am fortunate enough to wake up and create.

El Santos Studio – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I make marks on a canvas or surface of choice using different media of paints, pastels, random objects–basically anything that gets in my way. I have several different projects I work on.

“My Greatest Hits” is one of my more popular series. I reinterpret album covers. I’m starting to creep into other popular media like VHS covers, books, and movie posters. It’s fun to rewrite history, and watch this project evolve.

One of my other main projects is “Faces From Xibalba.” It’s a series inspired by the Popul Vuh (The Mayan Creation Account). I learned about the creation account when I was I was an adult, and was shocked the place I hailed from had a creation account. The series fictionalizes Mayan gods. Again, I’m rewriting history. I probably read 1984 too much as a kid.

I’m most proud of my constant production, and work ethic. Anyone that creates is their own animal, it’s just how hard you want to run with it that matters in the end.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is making things. I’m successful everyday I put my studio work in. Everything that emanates from that is bonus, but it’s the constant production of work that brings me the most joy.
