Meet Shannon Caldwell of Something You… Beauty

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Caldwell.

Shannon, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Since high school, I was the person everyone came to for makeup advice. In college, while figuring out what to do with my life, I decided to look a little more closely at doing the job properly. As I worked in real estate and, later, traveled with a major automaker, I took every opportunity to assist artists in different genres of makeup artistry and soaked up every bit of education I could find! When I decided to stop traveling and focus on being a full time, freelance makeup artist, my business skyrocketed as those friends became clients. It was a happy accident that I’m still ecstatic about!

Now I’m 20+ years deep into this amazing career and am fortunate enough to get my hands into all aspects of makeup artistry from special occasion & bridal to commercial to education. But above all, I’m overwhelmed with the community that’s come together in DFW…artists helping other artists by lifting each other up and making our industry stronger and better than ever.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Getting to this point in my career has been difficult in the most rewarding of ways. When I got my start, there was no internet or YouTube to get instant legitimacy from. We worked really hard just to get in front of someone who would let us wash their brushes and carry their gear FOR FREE!

Dues had to be paid, relationships had to be fostered and you had to be able to do makeup on a face other than your own back in those days. While times have changed and the path is very different, I wouldn’t trade a thing because it’s made me a strong artist with a keen business sense. I’m grateful for every ‘no’ and for every client who’s been redirected because I took a great lesson with me.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Something You… Beauty story. Tell us more about the business.
Something You…Beauty specializes in on-location special occasion and bridal makeup and hairstyling services in Dallas, Fort Worth and beyond. We are a collection of exceptional artists who want to help each client realize their styling vision while maintaining authenticity. Our distinction is one of effortless luxury and we take great pride in the individual attention each client receives while in our care.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
There’s a great quote by the Roman philosopher, Seneca “Luck Is What Happens When Preparation Meets Opportunity” very accurately describes my thoughts on LUCK in general. We all make our own, good or otherwise, by recognizing opportunities that present themselves and being prepared to act upon them whether by education, experience or energy. I’ve been presented with great opportunities that I missed because I didn’t have the experience to take them on but I’ve educated myself into others. Any success I have in my business can be attributed to the desire to learn more and always improve.
